so this nights topic is, how important is box art to you?

have you ever bought a game because of box art, or it made your descision a little easier to?

for me its important but not so much that i would buy a game stricktly on boxart

No. I'm sure you've heard the saying "never judge a book by its cover."

It's true.

Metal Gear Solid 4 has a very bland and dull cover art, but I still give the game a perfect 10.

Not all that important for me, however it is essential that it looks good to catch people's eye if they don't know about it.

could not agree more, if a company has a terrible box art, do you think it drops sales?

Nope. I could care less about box art. Gameplay, story, etc > boxart....well, unless they had Danica Patrick, or Kate Beckinsale, Padma Lakshmi, or Salma Hayek on it...then I suppose it could be a bit important...

My opinion about a box art affecting my decision to purchase a game? Never. Overall, I like the box art designs that have come out for games. They're usually very tasteful so it has never been a problem for me.

I wouldn't buy a game because of the box art, but when talking about Platinum (PAL version of greatest hits) vs original box arts, then it matters alot to me. I hate the PS3's platinum box arts, whoever thought of making them bright yellow should be fired. The later PS2 platinum box arts were the best.

If games and consoles didn't matter what would you buy...

These:

mgs4 platmc

or This?

Nope. Do I like having something nice to look at? Yes, but do I really care if the boxart is good or not? No.

The Box Art normally reflect the game's overall level of quality. It goes under presentation.

nope. It's not like wouldn't prefer the box art to be nice to look at (i mean, why not, right?), but it's just not a relevant factor in my decision process for buying games...

Of course.

I just bought this:

Look at that. Who wouldn't fork over 60 big ones for this?

The magenta glow is absolutely delicious against the dark planet backdrop and the white towards the bottom provides a good contrast to the detail seen in the character portraits.

I don't mind as long as it is decent. I guess to other people who know nothing about the game may buy it for the cover so thats why they must be eye catching.

Not important at all. I've bought a few games because of the great box art, they were all pretty much terrible. I read about the games, watch videos, play the demo, etc. By the time I make up my mind to buy something, I've probably never bothered to look at the box art.

I really don't care that much, but I do prefer a good boxart over a bad one. Take Heavy Rain for instance: If I never saw the EU box art I wouldn't have known how crappy the US one really is. The Bioshock 2 cover kinda irks me with all its glimmer. That cover sparkles like Edward Cullen in the sunlight. And thats just..... Not cool looking.

Heck yeah! I love awesome box art! I consider them fine works of art! When I get a new game, I just stare at the cover for 10 minutes or so, taking in every detail!

Only when i am not sure if i want to buy a game but i am already holding it in my hands in some store, which means it shouldn't be but there have been occassions that bad box art certainly repelled me, as in the case of Condemned 2. I think that had the worst design ever, but it was not a bad game when i got around to it... :)

Yes. It matters to me that a company cares about their product enough to come up with an artistic, appealing cover design. If a great game doesn't have a good cover it's not going to stop me from enjoying the game, but I will be dissapointed for sure.

No, it doesn't matter, since I buy games by reviews not by boxes art, even the infamous ugly covers that people talk about, like the Uncharted 2 one, I don't find them that ugly to the point of thinking about them.

Are you nuts. Just because the box art may look appealing, it doesn't reflect what the game on the disc will be like. If I'm getting a game, I make sure I know whats its about and ifI like the gameplay from what I've seen on websites.

All I ever see is the spine of the case. Only time Isee the box art is if I'm taking the disc out or putting it back in the case.

I can appreciate a good box art, but a game is a game... obviously I'm not going to buy Hannah Montana Heroes even if the cover art tells an epic tale of pirates battling ninjas... okay, maybe I would for cheap, but that's an exception!

Its not important like it impacts if i will get the game or not, but yes its important in my collection. I don't like having a game that is missing a manual, original box, or art cover.

I think that any game developer should make the effort to try and create an innovative design for the box art on all of their games, why spend vast amounts of time creating a sharp looking and brilliant game then let it down by making little effort on the cover, I have no doubt that it affects the sale of the product. But ofcourse most of the people on GS will ofcourse still get the game because they've seen the gameplay, a large majority of people probably spend little when deciding which games to pick up and may go off the box cover alone.
