If they took it out and sold the PS3 without it, couldnt they sell the PS3 for $400 like the 360? (although all their games are on blu-ray, so that would probaly be a bad idea.) is this the only reason why its 200 dollars more?

Yes.

You should be happy because most blue ray players are 1000 bucks in average. So when people complain about the 600 bucks price of the PS3 it just further demonstrates there level of involement and care to figuring out why and if it really is worth it which it is

And you ask too many questions

It's a new type of drive, uses a blue diode (spelling) to make a blue laser instead of red. It just costs more being new technology and different parts. I can't compare full Blu-ray players because those also requre a small computer inside to run HD video on top of the drive, those cost $1000. Just the $500 Toshiba HD-DVD HD-A1 player I have has a Pentium 4 2.5ghz and a stick of 1gig of ram. So you can't compare a full player as the cost of blu-ray when we are talking about the single part , the drive, in the PS3

if they took it out, it'd just be a ps2 with better graphics. Microsoft uses money, Sony uses brains. Without Blu-ray, Sony would have no success against any of the consoles now or in the future.

The PS3 needs the blu-ray player to play games, so it will always have it.  Trust me its a good thing.  I have a dream that one day we will all understand that concept.

built in blu-ray is also the reason why sony is winning this format wars, that article from the HD-DVD camp was pretty lame saying that they sold 100k and blu-ray didn't but they haven't counted ps3s as blu-ray players, they haven't counted the HD-DVD add on for 360 either but it sold only 10k

anyway there are 3mil blu-ray players at peoples homes and only 120k HD-DVD players max.

Yes thats the reason. It depends on how you look at it on whether you think your getting a deal with buying a ps3 or not. If blu-ray interest you, then yes it is worth buying a ps3 because a blu-ray player will cost you around $1,000. BUT, if you don't care to have blu-ray, then no, it's not worth it and you will feel like I do (that sony is forcing something on you that you don't want and forcing you to pay extra for it). I do want a ps3, but I am waiting on a price drop and I may even wait on the redesign that sony does for every system.

If you are talking about the 500Gb ultraviolet disc Pionner is working on, it's true but this is way too costy to make for now and will probably be use for huge server back up and other stuff like this, But who knows?

BluRay is also the reason why companies consider building their "masterpiece" games for the PS3.

I wouldn't omit it just for price concerns.

HD-DVD also uses a blue laser just like Blu-ray, not a red laser.

Just think though, when buying a PS3 you are buying quality.  This 600 dollar piece of future technology has a predicted life span of 10 years.  And after watching a blue-ray movie and then watching a dvd......I refuse to watch dvds unless I have to.

and down the line, more developers are going to use the extra capacity of the blue-ray disks for their games. it is inevitable
