Home is just another addon to sony's great online service
It's basicly a virtual networking system , you walk around as a created "You", talk to people , play games with them , watch movies , listen to music, and you get to create your own virtual apartment and show off your trophies to other players. Its basicly achievements like xbox live but better
HOME is Sony's on-line game community that may be as good or better than LIVE once it's completely finished. It could be another part of the remote play between the PS3 and PSP later after some bugs and glitches are worked out.
Home is just a part of PSN it's not technically the service against XBL but it will feature the community features which are lacking in PSN right now. Sony did say that the main features in Home will be available through the XMB.
Xbox Live by definition; is a variety of services including downloadable movies, quality hosting, and downloadable games from one place. PSN would be the equivalent to that although its debated which service is more stable. Personally, I think Microsoft has a better over-all online service than PS3 currently. I do hope PS3 jumps up though and delivers on even greater fronts than 360...I hate 360's console dashboard...PS3's is much more smooth; but the service is still lacking.

"What is Home?
Sony is due to release Home in Q1 2008; it's a virtual world where you can create and customize an avatar and a home for your avatar (ala The Sims). Also, you can access stuff from the Playstation Store in virtual shops, hang out at public spaces with other online PS3 users, and play virtual arcade games. You can text chat using your PS3 remote or keyboard or voice chat using a Bluetooth headset. You can invite your new-made friends back to your private home and share music and videos saved on your PS3, and even invite them to play multiplayer games together. I think Home is sortof a cross between a few different features of 360 and Wii. There's the Mii aspect of it, and there's the trophy aspect, which is like the hugely successful achievement system from the 360. As for Xbox Live, I think PSN and the [free] online play is more their answer to XBL. Not too great an answer, but Sony is expressing willingness to step it up over the next year and Xbox's first year wasn't great.

Home is a little more than just Second Life on the PS3. With Home will eventually come game session creating for instantly inviting friends and trophies. Things that Second Life had absolutely no need for since it was its own game and not a service.
With that said, I do agree with your second paragraph. At the moment Live offers more in the form of TV and Movies, as well as in-game chatting and other community features, all of which could potentially be added with in-game xmb access.
Home isnt supposed to be an answer to Xbox Live. It is a genius attempt to make a consoles online interface visually marketable and it will work. Think about the general public, not the average gamer, seeing two commercials one for Xbox Live and one for Home. Xbox live will sound exactly the same to PSN, Home will leave people saying wow, wanting more. Home will get the average person to pick a console and it will be PS3.
Why does every topic in the PS3 forums seem to mention the 360? The Halo killer, the XBL killer...thank gee whiz no other forums are like this. Seriously, go to system wars or something if your inner fanboy is crying out. Nothing is perfect, so naturally there will be pros and cons to each, just be happy you have a mf'ing ps3.

I agree with you but I also understand people's need to have a mature system-war type of conversation without the ignorant fanboy posts that comes with damn near all threads in SW. Thus far, everyone has shared his/her opinion in an intelligent and coherent manner and there hasn't been one mention of sheep/cow/lemming/hermit etc. This thread would've never happened in system wars ... it would be overrun by ignorant prepubescent fanboys before page 2.
Home is an overcomplicacted and ultimatly stupid add on to PSN,all it will bing is a future of problems, i actually dont understand what type of social retarded person wants to walk to ur friends virual room and see their trophies? a screen like the xbox would do fine.
PSN is perfect all it needs is decent chat options and XMB intergration
