Is it a good thing that there's no definite mascot for PlayStation?

Don't you think Sony should've gone the way of Nintendo and Microsoft (or even Sega) with having a single character representing the brand? Does their choice hurt or help the odds in the console war?

@enzoeleazar: In Japan Playstation does have a mascot, a white cat thing called Toro.

I think the character doesn't translate that well internationally, so that is why they don't use it outside of Japan.

In the 90's, I think the system had a lot of unofficial mascots.

Thing is, I think with a system like the Playstation, Sony is trying to appeal to a large audience. Playstation means a lot of different things to different people - for some that's Nathan Drake, others that's multiplats like GTA and COD. And then there are obscure JRPG fans like myself. You can't really put a face to that.

I think the reason why Microsoft can kind of make Master Chief the face of XBOX is because most of the games they focus on making are FPS games and other really Westernized games. And Mario works for Nintendo since so many of their game mascots are well-known and it represents their approachable image.

@Ovirew: I've always known Toro as the PSN mascot for Japan, or at least that's what I read somewhere. That's what's different about Sony, they cater to a much wider audience compared to Microsoft/Nintendo and it's harder to put a face to that.

The first thing that comes to my mind when someone says PS4 is NaughtyDog's logo, I guess they don't really have a mascot like Microsoft. I don't think every PS owner knows who Nathan Drake or Joel is...

It would be nice, but that means a Sony dev. would have to come up with a game concept, that would allow for a long lasting epic character to fit its console. None of them have been able to do this. They need a Master Chief for their console, with a game franchise to go with it. And no, Nathan Drake is a douche, that is not on the same level as Master chief.

I always think of Crash when I think Playstation (RIP), and PS3 I've associated with Sackboy. I dont think it really hurts in the long run though.

The only thing that drags the quality down is when the mascot gets attached to every different genre of game going and then you just get tired of seeing them. Mascots are good if they are tied to generally good games.

@Ovirew: When Coolyfett thinks of PlayStation he thinks for Nathan Drake, but he about to have his last game. Then there is Kratos from the GOW series, but seems that even his GOW series will end. So what is the never ending series for PlayStation?? Many fans think its the Metal Gear Solid series, at least that is who many fans want as the Face of PlayStation.

Crash was the best mascot they ever had, and it's a shame SONY/Naughty Dog gave the series up. Now there are enough well known Playstation characters that gamers can take their pick on who they want to be the Mascot. Kratos, Ratchet, Nathan Drake, Sack Boy, etc. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing, it just means there isn't one defining brand that Sony can pit against Master Chief and Mario.
