I heard it was supposedly bad, because the switch could break from over-repeated use. I'm kinda worried, because i've made a habit of turning it off every time i'm done playing. I've done this for a very long time now, and i dont think my ps3 has expierienced any problems; but you know, better safe than sorry. Should i just leave it on standby mode? I mean, it stilll uses electricity when its on standby, and i dont really like the idea of it. But if it means saving my ps3, then i i'll do it. What do you guys think?

I only turn off my PS3 using the switch in the back when I'm dusting it off and cleaning around the area its in. Besides that, I always leave the switch on.

It should be fine as long as you are correctly shutting it off first. I always did it with my PS2 and I never had a problem and no problems with my PS3 so far. Sony wouldn't have put it on the PS3 and left it on if it was faulty or broke easy.

I was moving the PS3 up stairs and when I was plugging it in, I noticed that the whole panel with that switch was kinda loose.

Since having it in standby mode all the time doesn't hurt the console, I think the best thing to do is just leave in that state (red light) instead of turning it on and off all the time, unless you're going to be away from it for a while or are unplugging it for cleaning or transportation.

You want to try to avoid using it constantly just because it is never good to shut something off and on again and again but its fine if you use it when you only must.

Just press it normally .. I'm sure there are idiot children out there that punch it to make it switch off .. don't know why.

Saying it is bad it like saying it's bad to turn your car off, because the battery might not work in the morning ..

It took me five years to realize I could leave my PS2 on standby:?. That's five years of awkwardly reaching around the back to flip that stupid switch. But, yeah, I guess that switch is pretty durable.

so i guess i should leave my car on when i park and go to my house? cuz it might not work in the morning? come on, i read the manual, called up SONY(twice) when ppl went around sayin they shouldnt use the back switch, and u know wat they said? its perfectly fine, only if u shut it the right way, there shouldnt be any problem or will it cause u problems in the future.

Sadly it is costing you money. How much I don't know but I would say turning it off won't hurt. Most solid state products fail in the first 30 days. Otherwise they last for years. So I would expect it to easily outlast the 5-7 year console lifespan.

I usually turn it off from the back power switch after shutting it down properly.. only because i only use my Ps3 about 3-4 times a week, after work, and all that stuff.....

On a related note, i dont know if there is any validity to this, but i seem to recall someone posting something one time about, turning it off from the back.. helps with the duration of the life of the Ps3..Again i dont know how valid this is... anyone know?

I had my first ps3 on stand buy mode for over 3 years, Now with my new one I turn it off in the back everytime im done.

Do you guys turn the computers off in your house?

Same principle, elctronic wires and switchboards can get hot fast, if it is cold out and you cold start, these is a possablility of cracking or damaging the equipment.

Sometimes you can even here the ps3 creak when it warm up

The only time I've ever turned it off is when I move it, switched the hard drive, or when there's a thunderstorm.

lol by the way i was just jokin with u, messin around, so hope u didnt get offended or thought i was attackin u in any way, and PSMOL, yea man i was comin here and saw few BS threads about it being bad for the system, so i actually called sony twice and read the manual, said it should be fine and it does no harm wat so ever, says so in the ps3 manual lol
