Is it necessary to play FFVII before playing Crisis Core?

As in the topic.

I never played FFVII, but with the absolute deluge of spinoffs, it's impossible not to be familiar with at least some of the basic concepts (and spoilers) of the game.

So, is there stuff spoiled in Crisis Core that would probably be best left experienced first in FFVII?

Nope, Crisis Core takes place 7 years before FFVII for PS1. It tells the story about an unknown 1st class soldier called Zack. So don't worry it doesnt have any spoliers for FFVII. As i said it takes place 7 years BEFORE, no need to worry!

No, not really. Crisis Core is the prequel to FFVII. So you're better of playing through Crisis Core then playing through FFVII.

No, it's not necessary, but it adds a little more excitement to the game if you have (in my opinion). Running into those old, favourite characters makes for some great fun.

Chronologically, I know that Crisis Core comes before FFVII.

But think of Star Wars. It's obviously better to watch the Prequel Trilogy after the Original Trilogy (never mind the quality issues of the PT), even if you knew who Darth Vader really was.

My question has to do with the dramatic impact of which order to play each game. I ask because I want to play FFVII eventually.

Nope don't worry about it. It doesn't really impact FFVII in any way. In FFVII they'd show you flashbacks of what happened in Crisis Core ok? So if you play FFVII first then Crisis Core, sure it would fill in alot of missing gaps but if you were to play Crisis Core first then FFVII and the flashbacks occur, you'd understand and know what happened. It doesn't really matter the order you play them in. I personally would play Crisis Core first lol

Well, I'm just concerned that NOT knowing the specifics of those flashbacks is part of the dramatic tension of FFVII. So if I play Crisis Core, will the dramatic tension of FFVII be ruined (or impaired)?

Example: Watching Star Wars Episode 3 before the Original Trilogy, and knowing that Darth Vader is Luke's father before that moment in Empire Strikes Back.

It would sorta impair the dramatic tension of FFVII or maybe even ruin it. I get your point now. Play FFVII first then crisis core, then you'd really be tensed about wanting to know what happened and as everything unfolds in Crisis Core, you'll be getting more and more shocked. So play FFVII first man!

You have the right idea, play FFVII first.

Everyone in this topic, and similar topics about God of War, seem to miss the point of what a prequel is.

It does not matter what order the games occur chronologically. YOU GET MORE ENJOYMENT FROM A PREQUEL IF YOU WATCH THE MOVIES OR PLAY THE GAMES IN THE ORDER THEY WERE RELEASED. Is it really that hard to comprehend? There is a reason games come out in the order that they do.

Mjarantilla, you know what you are talking about, stop asking the people here. Play the games in the order they were released to get the full "dramatic impact" as you put it.

It depends which spoilers you know... because the major plot twist in the original will be ruined if you play cc first. If you plan on playing vii ever, I would reccommend playing it first, and it will further amplify the amazingness that is CRISIS CORE!

There is some of the dramatic tension of VII that Crisis Core can spoil. There's also a certain tension in Crisis Core that can be influenced by whether you've played VII or not. The same goes with your Star Wars comparison. If you watch the movies in the order they were released, then there's a certain sense of inevitability the whole time you're watching the prequel trilogy, since you already know how episode 3 has to end. They would make sense and be good movies without that sense of inevitability, but it does change their mood. FFVII and Crisis Core are like that too. If you play VII first, then while playing Crisis Core you'll know how it ends. In as sense, that could be like a spoiler, but the game was designed for people who know how it ends, so in place of suspense, the story plays with that sense of inevitability to create its own sort of tension.

Chronologically, Crisis Core happens first. But IMHO if you play crisis core before hand, a certain enigma in FFVII will lose it's mysterious feel and just leave you feeling confused, in the "Wait... wha-? But didn't? Wasn't it-" kind of way.

playing ffvii first is better. But in this current generation, will you be able to go back to playing those polygonal characters? I've had friends who thought highly of ff7 until they saw me playing the original game. More than they were disappointed in the game, i was disappointed in them and their comfy cradle of awesome graphics...

p/s : I'm really surprised at the first few posters who says to play CC first since it's a prequel and that it wouldn't spoil anything. Have they even played Final Fantasy VII at least halfway through? Or has it been just that long that they forget what's happened in there that gave it its plot twist? :S
