Is it okay if I left my PS3 on for 8 hours straight with a disc inside?

The disc couldnt, but the PS3 probably got hot from being on that long. Its fine, there is nothing to worry about.

I've left mine on far longer than 8 hours straight and have had mine since launch. A third-party company even did stress testing in extreme temperatures while running the PS3 for 64 hours straight with no issues. You're fine.

There is a feature to automatically shut down the PS3 after an hour or more.

You guys don't have to worry about leaving the Slim on as long as you want. I've left mine running for many days in a row, no issues at all after more than a year and a half.

If the game was running while you left it alone, then you might want to not do that again, but if the game was just in there and you left it on while on the XMB then I'm sure you'll be fine. One time my bro forgot to turn off my PS3 and it was on all night, but it wasn't hot or anything the next morning, and the fan wasn't on full speed so it turned out to be okay.

Dude, seriously, it's fine. I've left Disgaea 3 running for close to a week just because I didn't want to play the item world crap so I left it on. Not a biggie. You'd likely be doing more damage by turning a system on and off repeatedly than leaving it running continually.

Wait, you didn't want to play the item world place so you left the PS3 on? How does that benefit you?

The disc shouldn't be damaged but it's never good for your console to be left on for eight hours straight like that.

While I recommend against trying this, I have mistakenly left my PS3 on for a week three times now.

Some races in GT5 take longer than 8 hrs. My PS3 gets 8-10 hr long sessions every weekend just about.

If you leave a game on pause you'll prob burn the lens. I know cuz i left GTA4 for 2 hours and when i got back my original release 60GB wasn't reading any disc, luckily the warranty covered it after i say it happen out of the blue ^_^

When I was playing GT5 I left it on for 8 hours straight several times, and 24 hours once. It still seems to work.
