[QUOTE="jfcundiff"]No. If I am right, the hardware emulation was taken out of the 40GB to make it cheaper. It does not bother me because I have a PS2 to play on if I what to. Titans23what's a hardware emulation
Hardware Emulation is the Emoton Engine Chip from the actual PS2, that gives the 60GB Near-Full Backwards compatability.

crap i'm mad now, i was hoping it would come soon because my tv broke and i have my ps3 hooked up through my computer but my computer has no av cables for my ps2...i'm screwed.they did an software emulator to play PS2 games on PC so why not on the PS3? seems really possible to meTheTenth10
When the PS3 came out in Europe it was missing the PS2 hardware but had a software emulator instead.
So Sony did make a limited software emulator already but only for Europe.
I wouldn't be expecting Sony to be working on anything regarding the PS2 now except the games they try to sell you on PSN.
[QUOTE="FlashCharge"]Can't be done with an update it is a hardware issue.Macrinot a hardware issue... the 80GB BC do not have the hardware, its all software emulation........The 80GB softBC units still have the EE (CPU) portion of the PS2. What it lacks is the GS (GPU) portion, which it then instructs the ps3's RSX to handle. This is why (I believe) that most of the BC glitches/issues that are still prevalent with the softBC ps3 are usually graphical in nature - trying to emulate the architecture appropriately on their own GS must have been tricky. In the fullBC models, they had both the EE+GS, so all 't3h C3ll' and RSX were doing was upscale duties and keeping on stand-by should you have pressed the Home button on your controller.
I think it is possible, and probable....eventually. I agree that they will probably wait untill the ps2 stops selling. To me, the move to remove all BC from all PS3's just doesn't make sense unless they are planing on releasing software emulation later on. I think it will be at least game specific. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't x-box 360 do this for x-box games? Patches have to be downloaded for that specific game to be played, and these are not available for all games? Computers don't have SNES chipsets, but that doesn't stop them from emulated SNES games(maybe not great, but it plays them)cloud_strife007The obvious reason is that - in short - Microsoft forgot to secure the IP to the CPU and GPU in the original Xbox, thus 100% BC is impossible. So yea, they have to basically write profiles for each and every game to add to the BC list. The reason some games get added before others though is that if many games share the same engine, then they try to write the profile so it works with all games using the same engine.

Umm....No, The PS3 80GB backwards compatible has hardware in it but not PS2 hardware, It has a Graphics Synthesizer Chip installed. So FlashCharge is correct.
Actually, it cannot be done. More than the EE chip was removed from the 40gb PS3. The 80gb PS3 still had some hardware in common with the PS2. The 40gb does not. For there to be PS2 emulation on the 40gb Sony would have to individually program each and every game to work on the PS3. A total waste of time and money. Don't believe me? Link
"The 60GB model launched in Europe was a new model (shared with the 80GB model launched subsequently in USA) which contains only a modified version of the Graphics Synthesiser chip from the PS2 and not the Emotion Engine chip. The European launch model therefore used a combination of software and the modified version of the PS2 Graphics Synthesiser chip to deliver backwards compatibility for PS2 titles. As a result the percentage of backwards compatible PS2 titles was slightly reduced. There you have it. It is not coming."The 40GB model, to be launched in Europe on 10th October, is a new model and is not equipped with any of the semi conductors from the PS2, and backwards compatibility would therefore have to be achieved by software emulation alone." Because each game would have to be individually emulated (much like on the Xbox 360), Sony decided that an effort like that would be much too costly, and opted to remove BC support from the 40GB system entirely. That decision has not only produced a cheaper system for Sony to manufacture, but for consumers to buy as well. PS3 Fanboy
Yeah its definitely possible. there is more than enough hardware to emulate ps2 games through software. however because they removed all the hardware it will probably take a long time to get it compatable with the many games the PS2 had. I think the odds of this are very likely because i think at some point sony would want to digitally distribute ps2 games over psn. If they don't do this then they are really missing the boat here.Dimbyeah sony plans is to overcharge for PSN games when u can actully get them for way less at Gamestop.

Um, no. Like people already said, you can play PS2 games on PC by software emulation. It's not a hardware thing. To emulate another system, you have to be able to provide similar or exceeding, architechture enviornment, or you will not be able to emulate.
The PS3 without the hardware architechture (Emotion Engine / Graphics Synthesizer), will not be able to emulate, no matter how inferior the emulated system is.
