Anything connect to the internet can catch malware(virus, trojans, spywares, etc...).
The best precaution you can take is keep the system up to date and don't browse dubious sites.

so there is no built in anti-spyware \ virus protection... ? , could you at least install linux and download avg or something ?

AVG sucks. I'm sure PS3 has some kind of protection. In order for the ps3 to be affected by malware, the malware must be coded for the ps3's operating system. No one would waste his or her time doing that. Your ps3 will not be affected by malware.BOOdist
Took the words right out of my mouth. I'm sure someone will eventually do it. But what's the point? How many people are they really going to hit? Someone making malware to be disruptive would probably target a bigger population (e.g. PCs)

Well... I was thinking about it too and if a security flaw was to be exploited on Folding@Home, a virus could spread quite fast. Not that I say it will ever happen but, this is the danger of such a sharing tool...[QUOTE="lordxymor"]Anything connect to the internet can catch malware(virus, trojans, spywares, etc...).

That's actually entirely false. Mac OS X has currently no viruses/malware/etc. during the entire time it's been available (5 or 6 years). I would think that targetting the PS3's OS is possible, just the same as it would be possible to target a 360 but I kind of think it's unlikely we'll see anything.
Why would anyone code virus's for a mac though to be fair, its about 2% of the overall pc market.

Its more secure than your computer from these threats, so don't worry about it
Possible? Sure, but I don't think it's happened. Plus, given the fact that the OS is completely closed (as in, not only is the OS source closed, but there's no known way to program for it), I'd doubt it happening. And I'd even doubt moreso that anyone's going to code a virus into their website for PS3 owners to surf there.
All other OSes with the exception of BSD have viruses associated with it. OSX has about 7, Linux has 700, and Windows has 230+ thousand.

Hahaha or someone very powerful like M$ could finally end up sony's console by developing something biiiiiiiiig
or, you could get your trolling the hell off of our PS3 boards. kthx.
what are these 7 viruses for osx? i'm 99.999% positive there aren't any at all, there are a couple of user exploits that were proof of concepts, but no actual viruses.Possible? Yes I'm sure MS is willing to risk their reputation and legal retribution by infecting their competition with viruses.
While they're at it, they should attack Sony headquarters with torches and vials of smallpox.

OSX has had several viruses, they are just not widespread. Is not hard at all to code something malicious for any type of OS... just a matter of whether someone really cares enough to do it.
Why would anyone even make a virus. Its so dumb. U dont even know who u affect do u? Who would waste their time?ez_moneymaker
People do a lot of things for no reason that makes sense to anyone but themselves or their own crowd. Why write a virus for a PS3? Well, you could be the first person to do it. A lot of virii are created just to prove that it can be done. Unfortunately, a lot of the harmless viruii that are created just to prove it can be done are modified by malicious people to actually cause damage. Then they can brag and feel good about themselves in their own circle of friends.

Game saves maybe?malware /spyware/viruses are usually targetted at PCs since there's information to be stolen (identity theft/browsing info/personal data, etc...).
Why would anyone waste time to produce a malware to steal, what again from a user's PS3????
_LEGIONS_
to catch a virus, your PC/gaming console/Internet device would have to be compatible with the virus (Just as with program compatibility). There is currently no know viruses compatible with the PS3 OS or the Linux distro available for it.
In other words.. "Don't worry mon, ery ting gunna be alreet". If your PS3 does catch a virus, keep in mind it would make gaming headline news.

Actually your post is entirely false. Don't listen to those commercials on TV, the Mac has had viruses, just not as many and not widespread because, well there aren't too many users.
