I have a North American PS3, the older 40GB model. Is it possible to switch the PSN store back and forth from the European one to the American one and so forth?

I don't know if you can switch, but you can easely create a new user on your PS3, create a new PSN account with another E-Mail und fill out the fields as if you are from the country you want to access the PSN Store

Yes but you have to make separate Japanese and European PSN accounts on different profiles.

So even though I have a North American PS3, Sony will still let me make an account for the Japanese and European stores? What's the point?

I mean, seeing as how Sony don't even accept international credit cards, and are prett picky, not to mention the shafting of non NA users such as with the free Flow game they had a week ago. Among other things...

How about the European store, is it the same thing as the American store in terms of payment and inaccessibility to some stuff?

Yep, the UK/ European stores are pretty much the same when it comes to payment options. As they will not take a North American credit card you will have to find PlayStation Network cards for the region you set up for (import sites or eBay) to fund the wallet.

Well you can download the content each store gets earlier or what's 'exclusive' to that store.

The main reason people create these alternate accounts is for demos exclusive to that store. I know that's why I created my European and Japanese accounts.

Just create another user and then sign them up for an account, there's countless videos on youtube that will help you. But if your going to make a Japanese one I suggest putting Hong Kong instead, it's all in english.
