The EE chip been out for about 8 yrs or more, so why is it still expensive?

I heard it's under $20. Every penny counts, though. The software emulation isn't that bad, so it's not really a problem.
I think they should eat the money and put it in there. Backwards compatability, to me, is a killer thing to have.Chaos_Bladez
Then go buy the 60gb. :)
Hardware's hardware, no matter how cheap it gets, its still hardware and only specific manufacturers have the facilities nesseccary to make them. It ain't Nike Shoes that can be turned out in any low rent factory, these are computer chips and no matter how outdated they get in terms of power they still require the same manufacturing process. An EE Chip is no cheaper to manufactur than say a modern Intel Chip, the IP may be outdated but manufacturing them still take up the same amount of resources and manpower.
Think of it this way, an old 1970 Chevy Convertable, if you think about it it's totally outdated in terms of technology but if a factory had to turn them out on an assembly line the cost may be just as much as a new Chevy.
Same thing with these chips, the IP is outdated but the chips still cost money to make and there is no way Sonycan get past that. Thats why eliminating hardware is alway very cost efficient. Probably why they stop making 1970s Chevys.
The reason why most modern CPU cost so much is not because they cost a fortune to make, it's cause companies wanna recoup investment on development cost once the investment on the IP is recouped then it's all profits.

I have one :). For people that don't have a PS3 and love to play PS2 games, it is a huge bummer. If I didn't have one by now, I would be EXTREMELY disapointed with no BC.It is prolly cheaper to no get make anymore EE chips. But cutting BC sounds really stupid to me. Sony makes money on each game sold, that means ps2 and ps3 games. They would be still making money on someone who buys a 400 40GB ps3 but cutting out the ps2 games they could buy really limits what money they could give over to Sony on each title. I wonder if they will support BC later if they start selling PS2 games on PSN. I think Sony must be really scared about the Wii and 360 this Christmass season. I just do not think this is how they should be going about it. CastleBomb44
Let me sum up Sony's thinking for you.
If you're looking at purchasing the 40GB unit anyway, money is a concern. (Otherwise, you would have already purchased their $600 unit at launch). In short, if you want PS2 games, get a PS2 with the money you saved by purchasing the 40GB unit.
The whole point of having a PS3 is to play ... wait for it ... it's coming ... gasp ... PS3 games.
[QUOTE="jdang307"]$27 x 5M = $135M. Not chump change.

PS2 is close to $99 so what gives. 1st off is the PS2sEE chip the same as the PS3s?
How much does it cost to add Wifi?
A
What aboutthe cost of put the ee chip on the motherboard. The QA involved during manufacturing.
Plus the cost of packages and other parts and services on the ps2.
I guess people just don't think about other stuff.
In theory, the software emulation can actually improve PS/PS2 games. That being said, you have to look at it from a business standpoint. Even if it was only costing them $5/machine to put the chip in, they're already losing $$$ on every system that's sold. To make the price cuts possible, they have to save every penny they can. Because it is a business, and without profit, they close up shop and we're all SOL.boofa_2001Yes I agree. Its not like they have as much as bill gates or microsoft.

Price is just as much a cover-up as anything:
"There's a catch to the lower price: The new $399 PlayStation model will not play games designed for the PlayStation 2, Sony's popular older game console. Mr. Tretton conceded that removing that capability, along with a few other features, isn't dramatically reducing Sony's cost of manufacturing the console but will instead encourage buyers of the entry-level PlayStation 3 to purchase more games designed specifically for the new system.
Mr. Tretton said the company's research showed that compatibility with PlayStation 2 games isn't likely to be missed by customers, who most likely already own the older system."
It would be nice 4 them to keep bc b/c of tradition. I thought it wouldve been a better move to just remove the blu ray drive and offer HD movies online.InfinityMugen
Yeah removing the blu-ray drive would be great, then we could continue playing with crap ports and no advancement in games. Sometimes people need to think.

Hmm...so a company that is losing 2 billion in their games division b/c of its high cost is thinking? They could still release games on multiple discs like they did before, I have no problem getting up to do switch them. Blu ray is still a brand new format and most people dont have a blu ray player. Sony should've waited for Blu Ray to become more accepted and cheaper to manufacture. Blu ray is just another form of blank media, its nothing special considering something better would just come along 5-10 years down the road, but I guess you didnt think about that either.

Good point, but let's face it, there are already numberous devs complaining about the lack of space of theDVD format already. I own the "other" console also and to be honest I am sick of downloadablecontent, put it on the disk where it belongs.PS3 games are doing this also, but I believe their games are all being rushed now to get the much needed games out to the consumers, I also feel this will not be the case in the future. I hope so at least :)

I agree. I see a lot of great advatages of blu ray, but its been a burden for the PS3 so far. Its up to the devs to use it to its full potential, because there should be no excuse to pay for extra downloadable content for PS3. Perhaps the mere comfort of sitting without changing the disk will be another justification for my purchase. :)

yeah i say lets get rid of blu ray...oh wait we cant do that cause the PS3 games are on the Blu-Ray format....well if it didnt have the blu-ray drive and the games were on blu-ray discs...what would it be then? a really expensive DVD player? again...some ppl have to think
and also, if the games werent on blu-ray discs, the games would then have to be on MULTIPLE (3+) DVD discs...i cant remember what game but they were saying that one game would need at least 3 dvd discs to put the whole game on...

I believe that if Sony were to implement blu ray in their consoles, it should've been after the PS3. I felt they put too much emphasis on it and made games a second priority and now its suffering b/c of that. That is my personal opinion so dont knock me for having one.
On wikipedia it's stated that Sony saves $27 per PS3, so yeah that is a lot. If you're still playing a lot of your PS2 games go get a 60gb version before they're all gone. I'm getting my 60gb on saturday, they're already $499 so they probably won't get another price cut. There is a chance Sony will drop the price of the 80gb by $100(make it same price as the 60) in the next month, but you wont get an EE chip, so really it's a trade-off, EE for 20gb. Most will end up swapping drives due to the massive amount of downloadable content anyways.GTASA_Cartel
Yeah, everyone knows Wikipedia is a reliable source; I can't wait for Resistance: Rise of Man. lol
