well, I got a good deal on my HDTV (this was on Black Friday) and I would never go back to SDTV. I'm not trying to brag or anything, it's just that is really good to see a game playing on 720p or even 1080i (I've never seen any game on 1080p, my tv can't support it)
The bottom line is, If you can afford one, go for it.Â
I was just wondering if it was that necessary to get a high definition tv before buying my Playstation 3. Is there a big difference in the visiuals when playing with High def. Thnx.UchihaAmetarasuHave you seen it yet?
Yes. I just moved up from a CRT TV to a $199 monitor and heck, it is amazing. It even takes 1080p (outputs 1680x01050, guud nuff').

your going to need an HDTV anyways if you live in the U.S, next year tv broadcasts will switch from analog to digital, which means you either need an HDTV or a something that converts digital signals back to analog for SDTVs. it was supposed happen sooner but the FCC forced the networks to hold off until HDTVs become more affordable. Of course, they might push the date back again. Â

i think they said the complete switch for all TV broadcasts to digital will happen by 2009
after which analog will no longer be available

not its not necessary
but playing the Ps3 on a regular tv is like sex with no orgasm
whats the point?
the difference is huge
Â
Isn't that the whole big point of it?UchihaAmetarasu
I think he means that the system looks good on either one (better on HDTV perhaps), so if you can only afford to get a PS3 and wait to get an HDTV, then get the PS3 then get an HDTV later on. That's what I plan to do. Get a PS3, then maybe later on, get an HDTV when the costs come down
It says that some games run better on 720p then 1080i do the games specify which to use?UchihaAmetarasu
Yes they do, sort of. On the back of the game cases if you check them out at your local retailer, it'll say the resolution it supports.
If i paid a lot of money for a hdtv, i would say the difference is huge too:p
I've seen HD and i think it's great, if you have the c$sh
Ninja gaiden demo is the only game that needs an hdtv (according to my tvscreen)
Â
I dunno, but Ive never plugged my PS3 in my SDTV yet, it's been playing on HDTV the first day. but everytime wnen I turned on my 27" flat screen SDTV, I just wanna walk away......It's way better on HDTV.

UchihaAmetarasu,

Here's a link that will show you what HIGH-DEF looks like on a PS3...
BEHOLD!!!!!!!
these HDTV questions are just plain retarded. C'mon HDTV has been out for years cable, direct tv and Dish have HD and the 360 was out a year and a half ago. If your gettn somtn like a PS3 and have only an SDTV your an idiot. This question is the equivalent of buying a subscription to the Journal of the American Medical Association with the intent of one day learning to read.Â
Really I apologize for my bluntness, but all that I mean is that you can buy a PS2 or more games for it or a Wii wich are all meant to be used with SDTV. Ok, would you buy a Blue Ray player without owning an telvision capable outputing 1080p or would you buy a hd-dvd player and not own an HDTV, when yo could buy a $30 dvd player and get the same picture as the Blu-ray. I have friends that have PS3 and only an SDTV and it hardly looks any better than PS2.
SDTV is only 640x 480 lines of resolution. While todays HDTV's are putting out 1920x1080 lines of resolution, secondly, the PS3 as well as the 360 are not akin to the old run of the mill gaming console. (PS3's newest update allows it to upscale standard DVD movies, PS, and PS2 games to 1080p) These newest of consoles are truly a single part of a component system. Having just an SDTV is only utilizing like 20-30% of the systems potential. Yes, I just pulled that statistic out of the air. Â
Yes. Make sure to get one with an HDMI port too. If you're going to go HD, do it right. 720p at the very least, but if you can afford it, then go with a 1080p set. If the HDTV you want to get is 32" or less, then don't bother going up to 1080p. You'll have a hard time seeing any difference 1080i and 1080p at that size.Â
What is also important is to get a decent surround sound system. Having high quality sound really enhances the game experience. There's not much of a point playing in a game in 1080p with a your TV's default stereo speakers. Â
In all honesty though, first get the PS3, then the HDTV, then the surround sound system. Â

Feb. 28, 2009 is the exact date set by Congress for this to happen
One of you mentioned getting a ps3 first then an hdtv after. A friend of mine also told me the same thing but can you clearify why please? Thnx.
UchihaAmetarasu
you need to have something to justify the purchase of a hdtv first. if u getthe tv with no hd source its just like having a dodge charger without a hemi in it. The ps3 will be the hemi and u can put the exterior on it to show it off.which is a pretty tv
I don't have a PS3, but I did my own little comparison running Pro Evolution Soccer 6 on my PC at different resolutions (480p, roughly 720p (don't have that EXACT resolution), and 1080p).
As others have said, the jump between standard definition and 720p is pretty big, while the jump to 1080p after that isn't as huge (though noticable).
I played part of a game at all the resolutions and my verdict is really this- if you've never experienced it in high definition, you probably won't miss it. I've been playing at 1080p all along and once I went back to SD, it was pretty tough at first. It's definately less detailed, but over 10 minutes of playing or so, my eyes adjusted and it wasn't as bad. But since I knew how much better it looked, I wanted to go back.
So if the PS3 has games you want now but you don't have an HDTV, I'd say go for it anyway. The games will still look better than last generation games, and one day in the future when you save up the cash and buy an HDTV, you'll be in for a nice little treat.Â
It absolutely makes a HUGE difference, and if you want to get the most of your PS3, you'll need to eventually get one. But is it necessary? Nah. I'm still playing my PS3 on my old 24" SDTV, and it looks awesome. I'm planning on getting an HDTV in time, I'm just saving up money and waiting for the prices to go down a bit more.
If you've got the money to get both the PS3 and the HDTV, then by all means, get both. If not, then go ahead and get the PS3 and save up for the HDTV later. You can still enjoy playing PS3 games on your SDTV, and then once you get an HDTV you can play them all again and be blown away by how awesome they look. It'll add replay value! :DÂ
