Is MAG still active (or was it before the crash)?

So, I am thinking about picking this game up since its pretty cheap, but do people even still play it (when PSN is online)? Obviously it doesn't need to have as many players as CoD, but do you have any trouble finding full games, or at least games with lots of people in them (when PSN was up, I mean)?

If you are wondering why I kept clarifying, it was just to avoid trolls who would come here and say crap like "You can't play at all, so no! HAHAHAHAHAHAH"... yeah... there are some mature people on the forums these days.

Anyway, are there enough players to make this game worth buying?

I was playing it most days prior to the psn crash. Don't have any problem getting into most game types. I would advise people not to bother buying the DLC modes though, as so few people have them you will hardly ever get a game in either of the dlc game types. All the vanilla modes are pretty full though. They have, or had anyway, a free trial you could download which gives you unlimited time with the game. Draw back is you are capped at level 8 (out of 70) which access to only two guns to buy (you start with three vanilla ones, a sniper, assault rifle and LMG). Its nice to try out the game though. :)

Yep, i was playing quite a bit of online too, they had a pretty lenghty 256% xp marathon which i don't think was going to end anytime soon so i was playing it quite a lot - there's no real trouble finding matches though sometimes it would take like 5mins to get into a game

Personally i think once the PSN is back up, the guys at MAG should just make the DLCs free, everytime i look at one of the DLC lobbies theres like less than 20 people from each faction in it, making it free would be awesome

It's not too bad if you're good at online FPS', games like that are best played with a headset, and that's pretty important in MAG, for the sake of being able to coordinate a winning fight and to enjoy it.

Cool. I know this is the wrong thread for this, but rather than make a new one, I thought I'd just ask it here. I really feel like buying this game, but have the fear of getting stomped in this game. Any advice? Thanks.

I've only played a bit at a friends, the only advice I can really give is don't treat it like it's Call of Duty. It's alot like Socom, it demands teamwork to do any good, and if you just try to run through everybody and kill them you'll die alot.

Definitely. I havent played since the network crash. I prefer Mag over COD because of the demand for teamwork. Just a couple months ago was playing and Nobody would work together at all. I love my faction, Valor, but nobdy really communicates. Like two days before the crash, I finally found players who new what they were doing, and we kicked butt. Go figure that the network falls as we succeed lol

Heck yeah, I'm not a big fan of MAG but sometimes I like to jump in for a few matches and see how active it is.

As everyone else has stated, it's still very much active. I have no problem finding a game that is pretty much filled to capacity.

definitely worth picking up since it's cheaper now. when you first start off it may be a bit difficult to get into it, but once you're able to upgrade your guns it becomes a lot more accessable. I wouldn't say it's as tactical as people make it out to be, but it's definitely not a run'n'gun like COD. Like another person noted, they have a lot of bonus xp hours so it always feels satisfying after you finish a match.

Yeah there is still a fairly strong online community. The Sabotage (64 player) and Acquisition (128 player) modes are strong even off peak hours. Domination (256 player) is best played on the weekends or peak hours. The same could be said for the Escalation DLC (96 player - 32 from each faction). Interdiction mode (128 player DLC) is the only mode that is totally dead.

Shooting mechanics and such are not hard in the game. The hard part comes with understanding that MAG is not COD or Bad Company. The objectives are totally different and cannot be achieved with the same thinking. That is the biggest reason people rag on the game. 1) teamwork - that is what this game is built on. It is 100% objective based. Those squads that dont work together or have a poor leader will get wiped out. You go where the squad leader says. If he is terrible, then you can try to vote him. 2) KDR - MAG is not a KDR game...period. Squads that are more concerned with stats than achieving objectives get wiped out. You have to be willing to stick your nose into the fire for the good of the team. Good squads all role with a lot of medic kits, so if you push into an objective and get taken down, then someone usually will revive you.

Is a headset really a must? I can coordinate pretty well in BC2 by a simple combination of map layout knowledge and teammate observation.

No. While headsets are always good, MAG has probably the most intuitive system for objectives and that kinda stuff. Basically, headsets are always good, but never necessary.
