Hey I have a question regarding Metal Gear Solid 4, will I enjoy it even though I'm a newcomer to the franchise? After it was rewarded Game of the Year and received a perfect 10 here on GameSpot, I really wanted to start playing it but was unsure whether or not I will enjoy it since I'm completely unfamiliar to Metal Gear Solid games and have never played a single MGS game in my life. Please get back to me on that.

You will still enjoy the game, because it's a masterpiece, but you would enjoy it so much more if you played any of the other three

None of the characters, inside jokes or (INSANE) plot twists will mean anything to you as a newcomer.

By playing only MGS4 you will be getting half the experience; I suggest you play the first 3 FIRST, then go to 4.

I bought and played the essentials collection before MGS4 came out just to see what all the hullabaloo was about, and I loved it. I ended up buying MGS4 release day.

I'd have to say play the other 3 first. You'll get so much more out of MGS4:GOTP if you do so. The Essential Collection is still available and you get all 3 for a very good price!;)

I absolutely highly recommend you familiarize yourself with the past three MGS games to fully enjoy this game. I personally don't even think you'll get half of the experience if you jump right into the fourth.

Bro seriously, stop playing what your playing now and get MSG4.. I was a total new comer to the game when i played it and now its my new favourite game.....

And you'll also love it because its quite a long game so that makes it even better,
Story is one of the best ever,
And it draws u in with the story even more than some movies can manage.. Everything about MSG4 is great..

Strange, I understood everything that happened, but the only MGS game I have played before was MGS: Portable Ops...

Retrospectives I believe...

Nope...It was good storytelling...

first off this is the best game ever madee hands down and you do not need to play the first 3 to like it...i didnt. but it does help downloading the mgs database off the psn that explains pretty much everything from the first three.

Go and buy the MGS essentials collection off of Ebay or Amazong. It is only 30 bucks and it has MSG1-3.Play those understand the story and gameplay, then play MGS4.Oh and download the MGS Database off the PS store. It is free and under "Game Add ons"It is a HUGE data base full of MGS info.

My brother bought MGS4 and I played through it twice even though I'd never played any previous Metal Gear Solid games. I didn't really know what was going on, but the gameplay was alright.

Well ill say that as a metal gear virgin i only bought the game because of thenagging of one of my buddies who did not have aPS3. He kept going on and on about how awesome the series was and how much id love it. So between that and all the golden press it recieved i gave in and all i can say is stop debating it and go buy it now.

Don't play the first three games to understand number four, you should play the first three because they are just as good. I think I like the third game better than the fourth. The story was more understandable and Ocelot was hilarious.

As much as possible, play MGS 3-1-2-4... best option is to complete the series.

I'm sure you'd have fun with it, but you definitely wouldn't get the full benefit of enjoyment from it as someone who's familiar with the whole series. Simply put... It's a great game if you like the type of gamplay as a newcomer, but it's an EPIC game if you know the whole series.

Yeah.Martha is my SWEET,SWEET love. But I am a lover of older woman in general,Oprah,Suzan sarandon, the woman who host Millionaire now etc, etc. In terms of video game woman I would be with,it would be The Boss....Even in death. But Martha is the one for me in real life.

It might cost a little more but I highly recomend checking out the other 3. MGS4 is a great game but the fact I had an idea of what was going on probably made it about 10 times better for me. I don't know how available it is these days but last summer I was estatic to find that Gamestop was selling the first three installments of the series for $30. That includes MGS1 for PSX, as well as MGS2 and MGS3 for the PS2 of course you'll need a PS2 but it's still worth it. Now this is a personal opinion but in looking back MGS2 was probably the best in the series. It had the best combination of story, graphics (at the time, heck even today it looks good), and gameplay though MGS4 in it's own right is excellent. Anyway it's on backorder now but it's called Metal Gear Solid: Essential Collection.
