Great game\movie...... If you liked the demo you should like the game. The story will be hard to follow since you haven't followed the steries. If you google MGS Story it is bring you up to date.

I'm a huge fan of all the MGS games, but I don't think you will like MGS4 if it's the first one you try. It has much less gameplay than it's other games and is more like watching a movie. If you're gonna do things right, than play the first or second one and then play the rest. I would suggest just playing them in order from 1-4. There is a very little chance that you will enjoy the 4th one if you play it before any of the others.

It's worth playing for sure - however I was not as big a fan of the game as most people. I've never quite understood why it has such a ferocious following but either way it's got top notch production value and it's one of those games that everyone who has a PS3 should at least try - you may flip over it.

I couldn't imagine playing 4 without playing the first ones. I mean wow you would be so lost. Every single detail about MGS4 is based on previous games.

I could just see someone trying to figure out the ending to MGS4 without knowing the previous games :P

Technically, he should play Snake Eater(bka MGS3)first. Or he should just Wiki it...as long as he knows the basics of the plot...why should he have to wait to play such a solid game???

Fantastic game. You should try to read up on the story so you won't be scratching your head thinking "what the hell is going on?". I think there was something available on the PS store for free called the MGS database. Something like that anyways. It will reveal the MGS series in great detail about the time line and characters. I think MGS4 is now $19.99-29.99.

my recommendation is that you play the other mgs games first. you should be able to purchase mgs1-3 for about 30 bucks total and youll be treated to three excellent games and youll be able to fully enjoy part 4. you could just read the mgs encyclopedia, but playing through the series is much more fun.

It really depends on the gamer. Do you like to be fully emersed in the story and know the details of each scenario? In that case, the answer is obviously avoid this. however if you are just looking to kil 30 mins to an hour every so often, with incredible graphics and even better gameplay than jump on this immediately. The gameplay is great, you can upgrade weapons/ completely customize them and the missions are always fun.

If you care about the story don't get it. YOU WILL NOT UNDERSTAND ANYTHING!

p.s. there is always wikipedia, but that is gunna be a lot of reading haha (The older games, excluding mgs1, arn't really outdated IMO if you had any interest in playing them)

i just hate when people do this.... everyone knows 3, chronologically, comes first......

Definitely a must buy... but If you aren't going to play the previous ones, use Wikipedia or MGS database from PSN just to be able to understand the story... However the gameplay and the graphics are both awesome...

i played mgs4 without having played 2 or 3, so i only had a vague idea what was going on but i still really enjoyed it. it actually made me want to go back and play the other games in the series, then play through 4 again. maybe it would have the same effect on others

MGS4 was my first game in the series. Enjoyed the gameplay a lot but i was very often confused about the story and of course didnt recognize any of the characters that showed up during the game. Still enjoyed it overall.

Afterwards, i got the MGS Essential Collection and played 1-3 (as well as the 2 older MSX games), and then replayed MGS4 again and got so much more out of it than the first time.

I never even heard of Metal Gear until I got it. Actually, it came bundled with my PS3 I got for Christmas and I'm like "Wow, there's four of these? I never even heard of it." So I pop it in and play it nonstop until the very end. Even though I had some trouble understanding the plot at times it still remains one of my favorite games this gen, possibly my favorite PS3 game.

I'm using a video game to make me feel superior??...First of all,you must got some major issues to make a comment like that!!! It's not like it would take a major genius to figure out the story but most people who don't know the story don't know that MGS3 comes first. I just made a SIMPLE comment about which game he should play first....that's all bro. It's MY opinion....just as yours.:)

If you have no means (ps2/backwards comp ps3) to play the previous games, I recommend you watch the full playthoughs on youtube with codec , cutscenes , and gameplay if you have the time and want to get the most out of the series.

I'll start you out with Metal Gear Solid http://www.youtube.com/user/Hayato182004#p/c/9CE593B7903B1BB0/0/fzOuTnxNvGg

Never played the other games. Loved this one though. The story admittedly was a little complex, but then there was a stark contrast of story elements to give a lighter weight to the storytelling aspect. For example, the events all follow from the first game, but they don't necessarily require your understanding of the past games. There are some scenes however, that aren't necessary for you to watch and only come up a few times. They are easily skip-able, and even if you do, you won't be missing out on much. *Coming from someone who only played 4 of the series.

As a huge fan of the series I would STRONGLY suggest you buy the MGS essentials eddition (all three on the ps2) and beat those first, as the game revolved around story and is the main reason to enjoy it. Of course you could know decently what is going on and all if you wiki it, but will you really have a feel for the characters and stuff? Will you care about any of them and want to know what happens? I personally say although you CAN play 4, you should buy the other three first. All of them are amazing.

you have to play mgs 1-2-3 before to fully enjoy mgs 4 cuz there is flashback and many character in it have their own story to be continued....

You should definitely get it.

MGS4 was my first Metal Gear game and it was amazing.

Like others I used wiki a lot to see what was going on.

I will now be playing through 1-3 :D

i cant thank all of you enough..as of now im watching the full game cutscene-wise from youtube and it seems damn interesting..i dont have access to the game right now..all i have is mgs3 snake eater..but i think after i get to know the story of one and two then ill play 3 and then 4.. the only reason i am uncomfortable with mgs gameplay is bcoz of the top down view and the inability to see an enemy even if hes right outside your screen unless youre looking down gun sights..something they removed in 4..and thus i loved the gameplay too..

HOW much time will it take me to complete all the beginning three MGss if i play roughly..5 hours everyday?

No, you should play Metal Gear Solid 3 first.

Metal Gear Solid 1 = Around 15 hours
Metal Gear Solid 2 = Around 15 hours
Metal Gear Solid 3 = Around 20 hours.

MGS4 is the only MG game I've ever played and I enjoyed it. I died a lot at first but once I understood how it worked I had a lot of fun. I love anime though. All of the anime tropes in the story and character behavior and 20+ minute "anime" episodes breaking up every 10-15 minutes of gameplay was cool to me. I could see the experience being a pain in the ass if you don't like that though.
