Hey, so I was playing LA Noire and all of a sudden my playstation turned off automatically.

I turn it on, but it beeps three times and then shuts off. Its not the YLOD yet because I can still access the main menu. I believe its just an overheating problem and I just have to wait it out, however, I am wondering if anyone knows if my PS3 is close to death.

I have the old fat 60GB backwards comp. model.

Does anyone know if my PS3 is close to being finished? Or is this a common problem?

Sorry to say this but thats exactly what happened to my FAT PS3 before it completely bit the dust and YLOD. It's showing it's early signs of YLOD and doesn't have long left.

I guess you could try reflowing the solder. Some people have had success preventing/fixing the ylod through this. Try this at your own risk though. If it isn't currently broken, don't fix it.

Sorry for the downer of a post that this will be but the same thing happened to my 60gb and it bit the dust about a week after doing that for the first time. Mine lasted about 3 and a bit years. I'd recommend backing up the things you would back up just incase. Also be warned, when mine died the game got stuck in there :(

Sorry to say, but that is the very definitive symptom that you can look at and say "It's about to YLoD." I witnessed it on my old fatty twice, my friends twice, and one of my other friend's just recently. He texted me one night saying something along the lines of "great, my PS3 keeps shutting itself off." I just thought...oh great...The next day he had the YLoD. Granted I'm a wiz at fixing things so it's working fine now :P But please back up any data you can now while you still have the chance.

When people say fix the PS3? Do you mean like do the temporary fix thats on youtube? Or is there a more in depth professional fix that can actually extend the life for awhile?

Yeah but that heatgun/hairdryer fix has been known to fix some peoples PS3s for a good while. Just depends on how good of a job you do to it. You can still do all the little extras yourself like applying new thermal paste and clearing the dust. Obviously it wont be as good as sending it to a repair company that'll probably use much better equipment to reflow it. It's still the same thing they do and it's still only temporary. Personally I'd just sell my fat PS3 once it's fixed and put it towards a PS3 slim.

Thats all assuming you've got the common cause of the YLOD and it isn't some other hardware based problem.
