i bought a few $10 fans and they get so noisy afterawhile. I decided to get a 40$ and it stayed silent so far.Nope. You can have it on 24/7 without it failing, without any air.
A tip: Instead of buying an intercooler, just get a cheap, small $10 fan and stick it behind your ps3, so it blows the air out the back. Mine never heats up anymore with that

Nope. Unlike 360 its actually built well and can run 24/7 if you like.Like he said.

The intercooler is a WORTHLESS gimmick. The PS3 has a very well built heat exhaust system. You can feel alot of hot air coming out the side and back which means the heat is being properly exhausted.
This is just one of many examples that the PS3 is well worth the price.
i disagree with the notion that its a "gimmick"
i can feel that my cooling system does make a difference, and agree with the above poster who uses a cheap fan behind the system that works as well... lets face it ..we all love our systems but with the current generation of systems running the kind of hardware that they are...your gonna get alot of heat
i cringe when i wake up and goto work come home and realize i left the ps3 on after a night of gaming ...even though we run 2 of them at work 12 hours a day and no problems ...
in fact only 1 ps3 has ever come back to my store for repairs:shock:
No! The PS3 does not need any sort of intercooler what so ever! Here's a link I pilphered from another thread. It's a video of some Japanese guys dismantling one. Skip right to the end to see the cooler that Sony has fitted to this beast! Then compare it to the 360's heat-sink. ;)
I live in Egypt and of course it gets really hot here and my living room doesn't have an AC in it so I'm going to buy one of these intercoolers.
I can feel the hot air coming out out the side of the PS3 and it is actually really hot to the touch as well. I have not had any Overheating problems yet but I'm worried that I will soon. There is allot of dust here and as it fills up with more dust I fear it will start getting that overheating message.
I really don't want to have that while I'm playing GTA IV. =)

You may want to try standing the system up vertically before using one of those cooling fans. One reason those things can cause more harm than good in the end. As long as air is able to flow around and through the system then it shouldn't overheat regardless of ambient temperture.
By the way having the PS3 standing vertical allows a good amount of heat to escape from the system than having it lying horizonal.

I live in Mexico, in a really hot zone as well (+40° centigrade on summers). If you don't have AC, the best way your PS3 can survive the heat is simply by placing a fan blowing directly over it, and also trying not to play it for really extended periods of time (at 40° temperature, I recommend no more than 1.5-2 hours; let it rest a couple of hours after that).
Don't know, I don't trust the intercooler gadget. As for the dust problem, try wiping your PS3 with a towel on a daily basis. Also, keep it covered with a light towel while not in use.
from what I've seen on the Playstation website, many people get into a fight on this topic. mainly due to the fact most people point out that you use an intercooler, you'll do more harm than good to your PS3, and it voids the warranty on it.
quite personally, I think they're a waste of money. just allow it enough room to breathe and your PS3 will be fine. :)
Thanks for the info guys.
My PS3 is already standing vertical and has a room fan blowing on it. I'll just leave it how it is then. =)
[QUOTE="Neo1O1"]The PS3 may run warm to the touch, but it's super, super quiet.Duckman5
I totally disagree mine is loud as hell, much more than my Wii for example.
Your fault.

While I don't disagree that the 360 has a heat problem, all indicators say this silly Intercooler trend is either worthless or more harmful. It alters the airflow pattern of the machine by actually obstructing the outflow somewhat at worst and at best is worthless as it can't draw out and extra air.
Don't buy it for EITHER machine...
Ive had my PS3 on for 12 hours straight before, and it hasnt ever had problems. The exhaust system is great, and you can tell by the heat being filtered out the vents. My system has never even gotten hot to the touch. Dont get an intercooler.hillelslovak
I haven't turned my system off in months and hasn't overheated at any time.

HOLY! Someone's phone rang......but anyway that is one huge fan
I'm still wondering how exactly it's my fault my ps3 is so loud......Duckman5
There could be a problem where you have it sitting or there is build-up of dust inside the console that would require using canned air and a vacum cleaner to get it out. Or the room you have it in is small and there isn't enough air flow, even if the back of the console is to close to a wall or something else this could block the exhaust vents.
When I had my system inside a entertainment center the fan would run a little more than it does now. Also have you tried standing the system vertical because this does tend to get rid of more heat.
You'd think the intercooler would help the ps3, but I betcha it'll melt sooner or later. The ps3 puts out SO MUCH friggen heat. Gets on my nerves actually. Just buy a fan and make it blow right on the back of the ps3.
If you are low on money and need a heater, don't use vent heat. Just turn on the ps3.
