Even though it's the beginning of a new generation, but there have been massive speculations when PS now was announced that cloud gaming would end up being the future as it doesn't require a physical console. There have also been rumours that the PS4 or the eighth gen consoles would be the final generation due to cloud gaming. When it comes to profits, it doesn't make sense as to how devs and publishers are going to make profits out of their games as consumers are paying a subscription and have access to all those games.

This is all stupid as to why sony is planning on ending their tradition of physical consoles in the future as I prefer physical consoles over a dumb streaming service.

I think you're overthinking this. Just sit back and enjoy what this generation has to offer. 7-8 years from now is a LONG time.

I would say, most likely, yes.

Though speculating over something that could be five + years down the line doesn't sound appealing me.

North America is the single biggest market for games in the world, and the online infrastructure for that to be a reality simply isn't there, and shows no signs of being there by the time PS4 has been replaced. Until as many or more people who can buy games now the traditional way, can also stream games at the same quality and in the same amount, (damned internet caps) it just won't be feasible. If Sony moved to a cloud based streaming only service in 5 to 7 years instead of releasing a PS5, they be cutting their nose off to spite their face.

You can't lock yourself away from half or more of your customers, or only give yourselves to them in a very limited way, and just hope for the best.

@Randolph: yeah i agree. i believe that they will lose a massive portion of their fanbase if they go to a cloud streaming service over a physical console.

@BattleSpectre: true, we will probably start to hear more rumours about the next generation close to the end of the this generation in 6-7 years.

No it's not, people still won't have reliable internet in 10 years. The reason PS4 is doing so well is because the console can play games offline no matter what

Sony will have a Playstation 5. The data streaming service of Playstation now will be limited by Bandwidth caps. Depending on how much you play. The internet providers will charge you for that time.It would be difficult to play though a 100hour-140hr RPG.

Sony is going to have a difficult time loading the game libraries of Playstation, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Playstation portable, Playstation vita and Playstation 4. plus if they include Playstation minis and Playstation mobile. But if Sony wishes to continue with SNK, SEGA, NEC legacy games from the PSN.

With the Playstation 5 games added on top of all this. Keeping the servers going and the Cloud going for millions of Sony gamers around the world is going to be expensive. Sony has to get the pricing down to attract the mass audience need to keep the cloud servers going. Internet providers have got to let gamers have a decent amount of bandwidth. This is not like Netflicks where you watch a 2 hour movie and your done. Nor will Playstation now have a Netflicks like cost of $8.99 per month. Playstation now is going to be expensive.

So no need to worry that a Playstation 5 console will not happen. Cost will prevent the all digital future from taking over.

They have been saying this since the 16 bit era of the super nintendo and sega genesis. No need to worry bout it plus we still have games coming out for the ps3/4 and 360 and xboxone they tried doing this with the play online service millions of games for said price but that failed. The ps5 is gonna take what worked on this gens consoles and add on to it just relax and game this is something new they are trying for plus look at it this way this is a service for people that want backwards compatibility on these systems so they didnt mark up the console at a crazy price not to mention japan just got there ps4's like 2 weeks ago so yeah no need to worry yet bout it.

Where do you have a confirmation on any of this information? Hang on to your horse chicken little. Nintendo plans on redeeming themselves from that thing no one wants to own. Playstation is not going to let them have retail selves all to themselves. Personally Coolyfett would love to see generation 8 last a lot longer than Last gen did. 15 would be perfect, but Coolyfett knows thats not going to happen mainly because of Nintendo and their failures.

@Megavideogamer: True. After reading yours and all the other people's comments, I've stopped worrying about all of this as it might not even happen in another 15 years or probably never as people will discourage sony. I don't have the ps4 yet but I'm buying one at the end of the year, so I'll end up forgetting about all of this cloud gaming nonsense and I'm not supporting ps now as its pointless. It's also the beginning the beginning of a new generation so we got plenty of time.

Idk how cloud streaming would replace a future release of a PS5 because the developers still need that new hardware to make next gen games. Cloud gaming would only benefit current (ps4) and past-gen games. But I always like my physical Discs no matter what, because then you truly own that game and can play it on any console anytime without restrictions.

Agreed 100% and one of the BIGGEST obstacles(as you stated) for Sony or anybody who wants to go totally cloud base is internet caps! I live on the eastcoast and I'm with Verizon and as of now I don't have that issue. But I heard something on the news the other day that Verizon knows that gamers use up a lot bandwidth so they are looking into making us pay for it. :(

I still prefer physical copy of games especially when I can get a good deal. If game become only digital, I think the prices would remain expensive. I don't think Sony would ever abandon their physical consoles.

There will be another console, people were saying consoles were dead for the longest time before this new generation.

I hope not, the worst is kids of today are getting pulled in by the whole easy access no waiting already on the computer business what everyone is forgetting is that at any point they can take all your games away from you with ease and have all the control over you, without phyiscal content your pretty much paying for a license to play the game not the actual game itself and this is complete madness, i completely understand the ease of it, but the draw backs are so out of your hands you don't even know it, what will end up with esp cloud gaming services are just cities and cities full of server farms. Crazy to even think about, but don't worry they'll be a new console still to come. cloud gaming is far from perfect and until this happens we won't see it properly in mainstream
