The PS3 in my opinion is an excellent system, which has provided me with games and me and my family with entertainment.
As of right now there is only Gran Turismo 5: Prologue which is a smaller version of the final game which is going to be released next year and if your a fan of the Gran Turismo series, this is a great game to pass the time until the final release and it also has online, which has run smoothly for me.
In the Action/Adventure department is where Playstation has always shined, there are numerous games out such as Heavenly Sword, Ninja Gaiden Sigma (if you havent played the one on xbox), Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Devil May Cry 4, Assassin's etc etc.
There are also plenty of shooters, such as Resistance: Fall of Man, which is a great FPS, as well as the COD3 and 4, and Haze is being released later this week.
I find the PlayStation Network to be perfectly fine, I have not had any problems with any games, I have played COD4 online for a bit now and I have played GT5: Prologue online and no hickups to report. They've updated the Store which looks a lot better and is a lot easier to navigate.
Well PS3 can also be used as a stand alone blu-ray player, and you can stream files from your computer to your PS3 as long as they are on the same internet connection, which is pretty cool, so i can watch movies and listen to music thats on my computer off of my ps3 on a nice huge tv display and surround sound. It also has a few usb ports which can be used to attach an external harddrive and its also used to charge the controllers. And if you have a PSP you can access your PS3 and its files from anywhere in the world with your PSP and an internet connection, which was a really cool way to pass time during a boring lecture in class for me.
If you have the funds you really cant go wrong. It is a bit pricey, but having had my PS3 basically since launch i can say that I feel i've gotten my money's worth out of it and then some.

Gosh, I can imagine he would reply by saying that he thinks that GT is the best and that he thinks the PS3 has the best shooters. And then you would counter reply with I THINK GT is not the best racing game and I THINK the PS3 does not have the best shooters...and then it would go back and forth forever and ever and ever and ever.

Play GTR2, i guarantee you wont make it out of the pitstop. GT is an arcade game compared to GTR2.
PS3 does not have the best shooter games, but it has good ones.
Battlefield 2 probably doesnt have half the people that Counter Strike 1.6 has...As for CSS > BF2.
End of it.

Well, I consider my PS3 a good purchase, however, it is mostly my secondary console. If you want shooters, definitely skip the PS3 and get an Xbox 360 instead. This is all my opinion but the PS3 controller isn't nearly as comfortable as the 360 controller for shooting games. The control sticks are looser which make them feel less responsive for aiming and the "triggers" aren't comfortable to hold in place for long periods of time and half the games use the R1 and L1 buttons for shooting and such anyways.
As for other games, I love the PS3 controller feel. Its lightweight, comfortable and responsive. I prefer games like Devil May Cry 4 on the PS3 over the 360 just because of the controller.
Right now, the PS3 seems to be alittle light on the good games, well at least exclusive good games, but you will definitely find something to like. If you like action adventure platformer games, you have Ratchet and Clank Future. You want Action Adventure with a good story, you have Uncharted. You want a cool dragon game, there's Lair. Racing games, Grand Turismo 5 Prologue, light gun games, Time Crisis 4, RPGs... well you have PS2 games :) haha
Overall, you can't go wrong with a PS3 and I recommend you get one.
for racers there are different types. Gran Turismo 5 prologue for the realistic type, Motorstorm and Burnout out for the arcade type. Although Motorstorm 2 will be out later this fall with better features and more tracks then the orginal.
As for action adventure there is Ratchet and Clank. A bit easy but has a charm that you won't be able to resist and the replay value is pretty good. The different weapons are pretty cool and it's graphics look like a pixar film.
Uncharted Drake's Fortune. It is another action adventure game, but it is more of a 3rd person shooter with action adventure elements. It is a bit on the short side with the replay value being good. You can earn cheats by doing certain things such as killing a certain amount of guys with certain weapons or using hand to hand combat on them and that sort. Some of the cheats you get aren't that cool. I would say its at least worth 2 play throughs. There are 4 different difficulty settings with crushing being unbearable.
Folklore is an action RPG also on the short side, but the story is amazing even though there isn't a whole lot of flash and voice acting. It is cool to try out the different monsters and see which ones can make the coolest combos.
Shooters, There is the launch game that is still great today Resistance Fall of Man. 15-20 hour story mode plus pretty cool online although with the recent new on resistance 2, This and a lot of other shooters wil become outdated somewhat.
UT3, if you like things fast with some pretty good graphics along with cool weapons get this game. It is online only and shows a bit of age in terms of game modes offered, but it is still cool to play and shouldn't be missed, most people on here will say it sucks though
Haze a political shooter about a guy that joins a company which uses drugs to enhance life, but he finds out that these drugs alter the perception of reality and so he then is forced to make a choice about his own life. The graphics are not that good, but to be able to play 2 different styles of shooting in one game and with the addition of 4 player online co-op as well as fast twitch multiplayer Should be enough to entertain you for quite awhile. (there is a lot hatred and negativity towards this game based off the demo)
Call of Duty 4, Futuristic warfare. It features both single player and multiplayer modes. In the multiplayer you can get level ups and earn perks such as customized weapons and so on. This is the most populated online game on PS3, so if you want to get online and blow people away, this is the game to do it.
There is also a number of other shooters on the PS3 and more coming.
Killzone 2 There is a lot of hype surrounding this game because of it's graphical presentation. It does look good, but if you ask me the gameplay seems rather "done that before" kind of thing. It does feature a first person cover system where you can lean and so on. There is also a feature where you can help a teammate by giving them a hand to climb over something to a spot they can't reach. It all sounds neat, but we will have to wait until February 2009 to see how it turns out.
The PSN is pretty good. It is free of charge to use but doesn't have all the features of the 360 such as in game functions like music playingm messaging and chatting. At the end of the year though, PS3 should have all of these features
in my opinion the best shooter on ps3 is also on pc and 360. imagine that :)
anywho the ps3 isnt a bad buy but i cant yet say its the best buy.
Plenty of skewed opinions here...
PS3 doesn't have the best shooters. If you want damned FPS games, you go to the 360. (Gears of War rings a bell, though KZ2 will be decent)
GT5 might not be the best racer in your eyes, but it is no doubt one of the best, if not THE best, DRIVING SIMULATOR.
I was more or less in it for the JRPGs, but it seems things are changing with more Japanese developers jumping boat onto the 360 platform..
Back on topic:
In my opinion, the PS3 is a console with much potential in the near future but it's library is still a little limited (even with MGS4 coming).
On the otherhand, the Xbox 360 has a decent library now, making it more appealing in the present.
The cost of either console really isn't that different, since you'd be paying for an Xbox Live membership over time to have the same (or better) online functionality that the PS3 offers.

Racing, Action/Adventure and Shooters are the PS3's Speciality. For racers GT: 5 is lookin' good, for Shooters I'd huddle on over to the Orange Box or Warhawk and for Adventures, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Ratchet and Clank might be good decisions.
Some of you guys wasted way too much typing on this question.
To the original poster...do you really think that anyone in the PS3 Forum is going to badmouth their system, or tell you to go buy something else?

Do some research and figure that out on your own. Any one of us ps3 users or non ps3 users can tell you this is a hot machine to get or it's the worst, but if you go with what we say you may be missing out on a good console or may be buying the worst. Just do some research and guide yourself to the conclusion of whether this is the system to buy or not.

Gran Turismo arcadey? Is that why car manufacturers all around the world are flocking to get their cars into Gran Turismo 5? There's a reason why Gran Turismo is called "The real driving simulator." Even professional race car drivers use Gran Turismo to practice their skill. You my friend have no idea what you're talking about.

:S your asking this in a PS3 forum what do you think the answers gonna be lol
as a machine (hardware) its very good, its machine you can trust... is not noisy. BD, blutooth, dvd's and many other things makes it an awesome choise.
but the thing is that it does not have many good games yet... but they are coming.. so
my advice will be to get it when mgs4comes out :D

Pretty much /thread.
To those ppl who have been arguing about the best racing game, in my personal opinion after playing GT, Forza, PGR all i can say is that i've found GT to be on top, not that the others are bad, Forza is really close to GT and does a lot of things that GT doesnt do but i wish it did, but I still feel that GT is one of the better ones if not the best, maybe its the controller, the 360 controller is great for FPS no doubt, but i think its easier to race on the PS controllers, or maybe i'm just used to driving on PS controllers since GT1,2,3,4,HD,5P so i find it easier, whatever the case do realise that the inital claim was not actually that Gran Turismo is the best racing game, but rather its the 'Mother of All' racing games, and I don't really think anyone can doubt that, because GT has paved the way for so many other racing games and has made the genre what it is today.
And I'm also glad you decided to buy a PS3, i hope you enjoy it! *whispers Uncharted (I just loved that game)*

I love how the experts came out of the woodwork to give their opinions and ended up fighting about which game is best in it's genre. However, back on topic, I think that several of the people who have stated game titles and features of the PS3 have done a good job of explaining the basics that you will need to know in order to make an informed purchase. Realistically, you will have to come to a point where you make a list of the features you want in a console (online, shooters, RPGs, Action/Adventure, innovation, functionality, dependablity) and most likely you will come to the conclusion that many of us have. The Playstation 3 is the in most people's top two of the best three consoles currently on the market (if not their number one). I've had my PS3 (60GB) since June of last year and it's practically paid for itself (read my blog on this). Anyone here can tell you that every time Sony updates their console we all get new functionality and features that make the console even more valuable.
I hope you make the right decision for yourself. And hey, if you end up getting a PS3 make sure you add me as a friend so I can show you the ropes. You'll find my PSN ID below.
I absolutely love my PS3. I'm not going to waste time comparing it to other systems; instead I'm going to judge it on its own merits.
First off, you're getting a well built, high tech piece of equipment. Hold the thing in your hands and it just feels like you're holding a piece of high quality electronic device. The hardware is simply immaculate. If you have an HDTV, then Blu-Ray movies are an excellent benefit to having a PS3. Seriously...once you watch Blu-Ray, you'll never want to go back. My girlfriend isn't into tech and stuff, but now that she's experienced Blu-Ray, even she can tell the difference.
Using the PS3 is very easy. As I stated before, my g/f isn't very tech savvy, but it is simple enough for her to use without any problems. We use our PS3 to play video games (we play a lot of Puzzle Fighter together), watch Blu-Ray movies, store movies and photos, and use as a jukebox. The only feature we don't use is the web browser. The fact that we can store DIVX movies on the hard drive is an absolutely fantastic feature. We have every Family Guy episode on our PS3, about 3000 songs, and a couple of hundred pictures that we like to show off on our HDTV.
As for games...well...that's the reason I chose to buy the PS3. I'm a HUGE fan of the following franchises: Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Tekken, and God of War. I've got a bunch of great games: Grand Theft Auto IV, Call of Duty 4, Guitar Hero 3, Warhawk, Fight Night Round 3, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Oblivion, and The Orange Box. In addition to these games, I've got a whole bunch of PSN games and old school PS1 games that I downloaded off of the PS Store. As you might suspect, I've also got a collection of PS2 and PS1 games from the past that I can replay on my PS3.
How's the online play? It may not be as streamlined as Xbox Live, but it works very well. Try Call of Duty 4 or Warhawk and you will get an experience that is every bit as good as Xbox Live (minus the $50 annual subscription fee). I have had absolutely no problems with online gameplay. It's not the Network that sucks sometimes, it is the users' connections. The only downside to the network is the lack of a unified friends list that makes getting into games with friends a bit more complicated than one might like. Improvements have been made and will continue to be made. Sometime later this year, Sony will be releasing HOME; a 3-D virtual online community that will allow for a more streamlined interface for communal interactions.
At the pricepoint of $399 for a 40GB model, I think the PS3 is a fantastic deal. I bought a 60GB model at launch for $599 and feel very strongly that I have gotten my money's worth. I wholeheartedly reccomend the system and say that if you have had a good experience with past PlayStation products, that the PlayStation 3 will fit the bill.
Looking forward to see you online sometime.
