You can't get a virus on PSN. It is 100% safe when playing online. Just make sure not to EVER give your PSID password to anybody.

wow are you serious? sigh, do us a favor and don't even get on...it'd help us all, really.

He's just being precautious. It's an electronic piece of hardware with access to the internet; there are always risks when dealing with things like this. While the PlayStation Network in particular may be a secure system, it isn't common nor universal knowledge. Your post simply assumes that everyone knows as much as you do. Now please apologize to TC; that was uncalled for.

Actually every electronic device with memory and the ability to get extrenal data (CD, DVD, BR, online) could receive viruses or other unwanted ssoftware :S I guess that Sony checks everything the offer in their PSN shop, which is nice, but actually there is a possibility (even if it's a small one), that some user(s) might spread viruses with private messages :/ There is no such thing as a complete secure device as long as it can receive extrenal data.

PSN is safe as any other consoles online capability. As long as you're not giving your info out. You can't get viruses..it's not a computer in a sense..it's a video game. You have nothing to worry aboot

There is at least one expoit or there wouldn't be the possibility of installing custom firmware on the PS3 :/ Don't get me wrong, I do know that the chances are extremly small, but if somebody manages to spread a virus, we don't really have a chance against it :/ Yeah there is no such thing as a virus for PS3 now, but there is the possibility and it has been proved, that there are exploits for the PS3s OS :S

i did not mean that it was impossible, i just stated that "as far as i know" there isn't a virus for the ps3 os, just like there is a virus for mac os, but they already patched the os, so it is still quite (maybe infinintely) safer than windows os... :)

Really, this is the first thread I've seen with this topic... hmmm. But, yes it is possible to get a virus on the PS3... it's a computer after all. It's just a matter of someone creating a virus, and then finding a way to spread it around.

Your chances of having a viral problem with PSN, is extremely slim compared to simply surfing the'net. I have no qualms using PSN or buying thru PSN.

Other than the BIG BAD CREATURE that jumps out and gobbles you up while your playing online. It starts by sucking your brains out and works it's way down.

I'm for definitly 100% serious. sorry im not mr. knowledge and dont know everything about everything and want to be cautious before hooking up an expensive piece of technology to the internet, cause we all know the internet is super safe and nothing bad can happen (and yes im being sarcastic).

anyway thanks to everyoneelse that provided intelligent information to my questions

Okay, so I've missed them... I'm not on here everyday. Plus, it looks like the most recent one (other than this one) is over a month old, and some of the other threads are two years old... one is almost three years old. How many GS users actually search for a topic before posting a new thread?

There's also no danger ATM. The point is, that a virus is designed for a special operating system and since Windows is the widest spreaded, most viruses are designed for it. Up to now there is no virus for the PS3, bute there is at least one fixed exploit. All you can do is have your system updated and hope that nobody ever tries to write a virus for the system. I guess chances are rather small since there are no important information on the PS3s and to create a virus that works and find a way for it to spread is rather hard
