Is Sony really thinking about taking the backwards compatibility out of the PS3?

They did it for the European consoles and there are rumors that they could start doing the same to US consoles. Obviously this would be one the biggest mistakes Sony's ever made so I'm hesitant to believe the rumors but I was wondering if anyone knew more about it. My apologies if this is old.

They're not taking it away, just doing it differently (from hardware to software). That's how I understand it, anyway. By removing the emotion engine, they're going to rely on software emulation...so while at first this will limit the number of PS2 titles able to be played on the PS3, in the future they'll add more and hopefully upscale them to higher resolutions. It's not as bad as everyone is making it out to be...

They're not taking out the BC, they're switching it from the expensive hardware emulation to the more cost effective and more capable software emulation.

Agreed. Sony will save money by removing the emotion engine's chip also. That will in turn lead to a quicker reduction in price--not that, that will happen anytime soon. I don't know what everyone's deal is with this. No one said a word about the 360's backward capability. The 360's is all software emulated also. It always seems that Micro$oft's decisions are overlooked and Sony is always under the microscope.

People expect Sony to be the best becuase of the success of the PS one and PS 2. Thats why the PS3 is under so much scrutiny.

Any idea when Sony will be making the switch? I want to buy a PS3 soon. Should I just buy the current one or wait until they make the switch and release those consoles?

Well, seeing as there won't be a price drop anytime soon, you might as well get it now so you can enjoy it earlier. no point in delaying the purchase if you are intent on buying one anyways.

There's little difference between the 2 systems anyway.

Okay cool. I just thought they would be different. Like the software emulation would look better or something.

Perhaps for those who don't mind downloading a whole bunch of crap to actually make something on the PS3 work correctly.

I'll take the hardware thanks.

But none of this will affect those of us that already have a PS3 so I have no complaints.

Yea but the rumor also is that the new PS3's will be able to upscale the ps2/ps1 games to hi-def, so they would look hella better on a HDTV.

You also forgot to mention that the PS2 slim had alot of overheating issues as well ( but then again i kept my fat PS2 so that issue never effected me ).... but anyways,,, i rather buy something that came with the parts it was meant to have instead of getting some brand new cheaper model ( not cheap price wise but cheaper to produce ) but then again that's just me ( thank god i already have a PS3 so this also doesn't effect me ). But yeah good luck with that buddy.

PS3 in Europe won't have the EE, and so with the US consoles, at least the consoles that will be produced about the time of the European launch. I guess...

You know who really gets shafted...hardware emulation owners if they use software emulation to upscale PS2 games to HD. It's alot easier to do that way then to pass hardware emulation thru a scaling process with software emulation...it'd be a mess. Software makes that an easy switch cause it can be run at the source of the image.

no. but I do wish they'd be more direct about what IS going on. the number of these threads prove that a more open flow of information helps THEM just as much as it does us.

They are not taking backwards compatabilty out i think they are taking the emotion engine out of the new builds of ps3. Thew are replacing it with software emulation, i think they did the same thing with the ps to ps2 backwards compatabilty. The Ps3 will be able to play 1000 plus old games with software emulation and more are coming with firmware updates. I think this will be good if it wil allow sony to do some pricecuts sooner then before.l

One difference is that we knew the 360 was like that, and that a limited number of games could be played and they actually had an excuse because they don't own the hardware of the original xbox. Sony on the other hand has said from the begining that the PS3 will be completely BC. They are not on the scope, only people notice when companies make mayor changes. And I would say that is one.

Is people growing more and more stupid lately? or is reading such a hard thing to lear?

THEY DID NOT TOOK BACKWARD PLAYING AWAY. THEY TOOK THE EMOTION HARDWARE IN ORDER TO USE SOFWARE EMULATION. 1000+ TITLES FROM THE PS2 WILL BE PLAYABLE FROM DAY ONE AND 80% OF PS1 COMPATIBILITY.

yes...but in the end it turns out to be another broken promise by sony.  One of the things they bragged about in the overly massive hype machine of '06 was that the PS3 was FULLY backward compatible.

Now they have to go back on that promise only a few months after release.  Sounds to me like they are scared.  There is no other reason to cut costs like this if things are going well.

I'd like to hear more intricately why the software emulation is supposedly more effective than the emotion engune. I'll admit my newbishness in this area, so if someone wouldn't mind explaining.
