there have recently been some amazing games released for the psp that are really catching my eye

especially wit that god of war bundle coming out, it looks like i may just become a new psp owner in the near future

but looking at some of the games coming out soon for the psp, theres not a whole lot to choose from. in fact it looks as if the psp is dieing out with no heavy hitters looking to be released.. additionally, a lot of the older games are no longer being sold,, my concern is that the psp is going to be the next original xbox with manufacturers no longer producing games for it anymore and such,,however im not up to date wit the psp at the moment or gaming for that matter,, and even though the gow bundle is really making me consider that no more gaming policy i kept to myself, i just dont see how it will be able to last without any games in the future.

but at the moment these games look amazing and they are the reason why im even considering buying a psp: final fantasy crisis core, god of war

along with possibly burnout legends and/or need for speed carbon, metal gear solid, and tekken

so yea the topic is basically my question

In a recent interview sony stated that the psp will have a 10 year life span & they also stated that in the next few months they will have some major announcements about some exclusive psp games. Most of the exclusive games we dont even know about yet. Also it was said at the time that the exclusive games dont enclude god of war or crisis core. So with a 10 year life span, exclusive games, upcomming gps system, a keyboard in the works, upcomming U.S release of the go!cam camera, a psp compatable version of the playstation store, a video download service & lots more i dont think that the psp is going to die anytime soon.

I'm inclined to agree. Hyperlink a URL or something, man. Otherwise we have no idea if this has any validity at all.

I feel this way about both handhelds. Ever since we left the GBA it's all been down hill, but I thinth the PSP is decent at least.
Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops and Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII are reason enough for me to keep it and I really can't wait till Kingdom hearts Birth by Sleep comes.

For the DS on the other hand the only reason Im getting it is the up coming KH game headed to the DS.

ive had the psp basically since it came out, ive played almost every single game thats gotten good reviews since then. if you get one you have to play LUMINES and METAL GEAR ACID, two launch games that are some of the best games for the psp still. some solid games are in the works for the psp, ive been playing crisis core alot since i got it. its amazing being able to play the origional final fantasy seven off the memory card, i sould have never known how beautiful that game looked had i not gotten a psp~

I love my psp it is soooo good and infact many games on the psp are either underated or you have never heard of them. There are many rubbish games that may appar to look good but my reccomendations would be all of the metal gear solid games including: ACID PORTABLE OPS, and portable ops plus. Also god of war is awsome.:P

This sorta diverges from the OP's topic, but... the whole "10 year life span" is something Sony has always said about all their gaming systems. This doesn't actually mean that they won't release a successor sooner than that (or else the PS3 would have still be a few years off).

Actually since mid last year till this month PSP has been great with great games being released... now we cannot expect to have games of the quality and fame such as GOW or FF:CC coming out every month, but am sure at E3 there will be some important announcements of upcoming titles out late this year / early 2009...

And don't forget The Force Unleashed. For people like me who doesn't own another console, that game looks very promising, I'd add also Lego Indiana Jones and Lego Batman.
And we players pretty much decide when a console's dead. In a flee market by my house, there are lots of people who trade Nintendo games, for example.... and it's like a Zillion generations old

No buy the psp its great don't lets the DS's sales of over 70 million world wide and psp's 33 million bother you. The psp has great games if you look hard enough its also a multimedia device mp3's, video, view pictures, and you can play online wirelessly theres also e3 coming up and the psp has a big 4.3inch screen so buy one today!

no the psp is not becoming extinct. They MIGHT just move away from using UMDs though. They can easily force people to buy bigger memory sticks and then sell games exclusively on the PSP store. I'm not saying it will happen, but it could. I just wish they'd stop discontinuing games. I am having a hard time finding Ace Combat X. Looks like i'll have to buy it used and overpriced since they stopped production.

If Sony did move to downloading full games on the PS Store then you would need a massive memory stick. What about making a UMD with bigger capacity... is that even possible?

Actually they already have full games for download on the Playstation store. PS1 games and psp games. but now that i think about it, they will probably never drop the UMD support, since not EVERY psp owner has access to the internet (via computer or wifi). but they will continue to release more games in digital form to save $. Memory sticks are not that expensive now. I got a 4gig stick for $35. and i've heard of 8 and 16gig sticks now. and who knows, maybe they will release a psp with a build-in 40gb HDD like an ipod. It's possible and definately a good idea.

We shouldnt count on DMC and GT4M, DMC was announced on 2004 and left there for 4 years, and GT4M was supposed to have been a launch game, i say, canceled, still i think the psp will live a few more years

Oh, and please dont talk about "possible" games, because they arent announced, they dont exist. period

Are you talking about its functions or its library of games... because its library of games is nothing compared to past Nintendo portables and its current success the DS. I like the PSP and am itching to pick one up but I don't think it's the greatest portable console ever... and if you want a portable multimedia system go with a BB.

It's not becoming extinct! If you go to Amazon & Ebay you can get the older games that is not in store shelves anymore. Plus you get to play Ps1 games on it which gives it a lot more mileage than any other portable system out there. And also other Legacy system games that can be run on it. The PSP is like the handheld of the future. Even if we get a PSP2 it will still be backwards compatible as long as they don't change the UMD format.

There aren't many PS1 games available to download from the PSN... no where near the entire library and no FF7 which he inquired about.

"more mileage than any other portable system out there" Look at the DS. Its huge library of games plus the entire library of GBA games before it gives "more mileage than any other portable system out there", not the PSP. Not too mention th DS has A LOT of games announced for the coming two years.

I want to get a PSP, I'm waiting for E3 to see if there are any games announced that I would like to play. Right now the only games I want are MGS:PO, The Dracula X Chronciles, Crisis Core, Star Ocean 1 & 2 and DMC (if it's ever announced). That is almost enough to warrant a pick up for me. I'm hoping a nice RPG and some other games will catch my eye at E3.

I'd say yes. I was the owner of a PSP a few years ago, but sold it after maybe 6 months. It just seemed far too clunky and inconvenient for a handheld system. When I think handheld gaming I think of streamlined, handy games. Not playing Socom on a blender.

Also, outside of this site and from the sole owner of a PSP that I know, I've heard nothing about the PSP in over a year.

I just don't see how it can possibly last.

no, the PSP is not dying.......In a recent interview with sony, John Koller said there are going to big PSP software announcements at E3:

"There's a lot of announcements coming up to E3 and particularly at E3. [Emphasis added.] There's probably 50-60 percent of the lineup for the year that has not been announced and there's some big titles coming. So there's a lot of excitement on PSP. "
