I've been playing the sly collection lately and most people seem to think these games are cell shaded and I thought so too until recently. I started to really look at the character models in Sly 2 and it would appear that the shading techniques are normal techniques and not actual cell shading. My assumptino is that, like borderlands, the developers used hand drawn skins on the characters that make them appear cell shaded when they are actually not.

That pic is from the tutorial of Sly Cooper and the Thievius Racconus. ( I am addicted to this game series, I have every sing one memorized.)

What is cell shading

MoNsTeR_zAcH

It's a type of shading graphical effect used in such games as

Wind Waker

Killer 7

No More Heroes

Look how Borderlands is rendered and it isn't cell shaded. It's my assumption that Sly is using the same trick

Borderlands is Cel Shaded.

Sly was also one of the first cel shaded games on the market.

Borderlands isn't cel shaded. It uses a technique where they mapped hand drawn textures to character models. The shading technique is the usual standard affair.

Borderlands isn't Cel-shaded, but well done on being the first person in the thread to spell Cel correctly.

You guys are right. I found a bunch of articles saying it was cel shaded, but it looks like gearbox eventually came out and squashed that it was not cel shaded.

I also am not sure if they changed the cel-shading on the HD remake of the sly collection for the ps3. The original PS2 games were definitely cel-shaded. I was amazed by those graphics when they came out back in the day.

Looking back at Sly 1, It's definately cel shaded, but the graphical style changed by Sly 2. I'm not so sure with the second two games

Sly2: on right

They are alright. They don't hold a candle against heavy hitters such as Rayman 2 (N64/PS/Dreamcast versions not the abismal PSX version) and Super Mario Galaxy 2, but they hold their own.

To each their own I guess. I strongly believe that Mario Galaxy 2 is designed better, controls better, offers more gameplay, and has more variety/creativity than every platformer ever made. I gave it a 10 while I gave the Sly trilogy a 6.5

They look cel shaded. That's as far as I'll look into it, lol.

And as far as the quality of the games, they're vastly overrated this gen. Last gen they were just good-great games, and since the remake people are starting to praise them to the heavens. I give Sly 1 a 7.5, Sly 2 an 8.0, and Sly 3 a 7.5. They're not nearly as enjoyable, deep, or well-written as the best games of this generation (and the last).

No, the more accurate statement would be that I enjoy Super Mario Galaxy 2 more than Sly and you enjoy Sly more than you enjoy Super Mario Galaxy 2. I'm a platforming nut and have played almost every platformer out there. I have very high standarde and very rooted beliefes on what makes a platformer good and what doesn't (at least at a personal level)

I've had a blast playing the collection, and don't feel like I'm playing last gen games. I got the collection for $20 and it has been what I have felt to be one of the highest value disc I have bought on the PS3. To each their own I guess.

Well the thing is that I have been following Sly since the first game, so that might be partly influential. Another thing is that each and every game that is ever released about Mario has the exact same storyline/plot, someone steals a princess so Mario and Luigi have to go and rescue her. All of the games in the Sly series has a different storline /plot, and each one just keeps getting better and better. That is my reasoning for the Sly series being better than anything that is put out about Mario.

I thought Sly and XIII were some of the games that made Cel shading popular.

Oh I see... I'm one of those people that think story is completely unneeded in video games. If they have a good one it's a bonus, but if there isn't one it doesn't matter. Great level design and controls are the ABSOLUTE meat and bones of a game for me
