The topic pretty much says it all. I have just come home from living abroad and I have the 60GB PS3 still unopened. I have a large CRT that can take S-Video but I also have a 20" Dell 2005FPW. It has VGA but also DVI, which I would prefer to use until I get a reAL HDTV.

What are my connection options?

you can buy a hdmi to dvi cable or a hdmi-hdmi cable and a hdmi-dvi adaptor, but you have to be sure that your 20" dell is hdcp compatible

i have the 24inch version of this monitor (1920x1200res), which i run at 1080i for bluerays, and 720p for games, have you tried running component OP?

i have not tried a HDMI-DVI cable because the general consensus on the fpw05 dell models is that they dont have HDCP and they dont work, im sure ive seen threads on other forums stating that, as i have yet to personally test it though, there is a large possibility im wrong.

the OP should have 1680x1050 resolution, which should be ok if he sets the ps3 to 720p, but it means he wont be able to watch blu rays at anything higher than standard def?

im not sure if the monitor can scale well, ive set mine to maintain aspect ration so 720 displays the same size as 1080i ect, and it looks ok, but with the 20inch version having slightly lower res than full 1080 im unsure as to if the display will show 1080i over component.

looking around for threads, i can find lots of threads that seam to suggest that the 360 runs fine on the 2005/2405fpw monitors, but i cant find any for the ps3, i know its a different ball game due to HDCP but, im fairly sure you can only get the ps3 working on dvi on the 2007/2407fpw monitors from dell, as they have hdcp.

crap, ive just stumbled upon this.

http://home.comcast.net/~aquacomputer/2405FPW/24-14.JPG

i thought the 2005 had component, i guess it doesnt, hmm, can anybody here confirm for sure that the ps3 works on dvi on monitors that dont have HDCP?

id like to try this myself, but since im unsure, and have never found a deffinitive answer, i never bothered buying a hdmi-dvi cable.

Hi, thanks for the response. You're right about the reso being 1680x1050, so I don't know if I can go 1080p and scale down slightly or just use 720. As for component, the 2005FPW does not have component.

Am I correct in assuming sony doesn't make a simple DVI cable for the PS3? Is that why you mention a HDMI - DVI cable? How much does that cost and can I get it at the local Best Buy/CompUSA?

Thanks again!

EDIT: Wow, you're fast, and very helpful. Thanks for the search. I don't know anything about the HDCP stuff, but I can tell you that we do indeed have a 2007FPW as well as my own 2005FPW in the house. If need be, I can just switch the monitors. It would be no big deal.

You'll want/need something like this cable for the connection. You can get one from Wal-Mart or Radio Shack.

If you're in no hurry, you can buy it online.

im really sorry about that mistake mate, i thought the 20/24 inch 05 models had the same connections, im sure i was told that by somebody i know who has the 2005, unless its the newer 07 which has component.

looks like you might be a bit stuck for HD on that monitor unless you CAN actually use DVI, it would be nice to get an answer from somebody who might know a little bit more about these monitors.

like i said, i can confirm 100% that the ps3 works with component at 480i/p 576i/p 720p 1080i on the 2405fpw, because ive tested that myself, 1080p does not work, and thats the A04 revision, i cant confirm it works on older revision of that monitor.

Again, thanks for all the help.

Hopefully you will find some info about HDMI - DVI and that it will work at least with 720p on the Dell 2005FPW. If not, I guess I'm stuck with the regular old CRT, which to be honest I don't even wanna bother with! As for buying a new monitor, this is just a stopgap until I get a real HDTV, something like a 42"/47" Westinghouse on the cheap. Seeing as I'm still unpacking though, I'm gonna have to wait a bit.

I found this and it's in stock at my local Radio Shack.

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062048&cp=&pg=1&searchSort=TRUE&sr=1&retainProdsInSession=1&retainProdsInSession=1&y=11&y=14&origkw=HDMI+++DVI&kw=hdmi+dvi&x=10&x=16&s=A-StorePrice-RSK&parentPage=search

Again, I don't want to spend $50 but I figure I can return it after getting a cheaper one online. Any news on the 2005 or the 2007 and the PS3?

You guys rock.

this sucks, ive just searched about 5 or 6 different forums, and i cant get a straight answer at all.

unless somebody can confirm on gamespots forums, that the ps3 can run via dvi on the dell 2005fpw/2007fpw i wouldnt buy any expensive cables just yet, might be worth a try if you can get a cable for cheap though, maybe borrow a cable from a friend?

ahh, it seams the 2007fpw and the 2407fpw do have HDCP, so you should be able to run the ps3 at 720p with a hdmi-dvi cable or just a standard hdmi cable with a DVI adaptor.

this might actually cause more problems than its worth though, as i dont know if you will be able to display 1080i minimum for bluray, if thats the case the ps3 will scale it to 480p i belive, so you might not be able to watch bluray at HD on the monitor, just games at 720p.

also, if your not aware, hdmi-dvi doesnt carry sound, hdmi on its own does, but dvi isnt capable, which means you wont have any sound, a way around this is to use the ps3 optical out to your sound system for audio playback, which is how ive rigged it on my 2405fpw.

tried to help as best i could anyway, its a pretty confusing topic really, hopefully somebody can enlighten us both about if the ps3 displays via dvi on the older 20inch and 24 inch dell lcds.

this might be the OPs best route IMO.

seams like too much faffing about tryin to sort the correct cables out for the older dell monitors only to find out they dont work, the newer dells seamingly work, at least thats the impression ive got after reading about 100 threads on random googled hardware forums.

Your searching gave me an idea, which was to search Dell's support page. From that I gleamed that with the HDMI - DVI cable I should be fine playing games at 720p. BR movies might be downsampled but that's not a major deal, as I should be able to get an HDTV in the near future. I'll get the cable from Ratshack later today and I 'll let you guys know how it works out.

Thanks for all the help!

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1182557

Sony may come out with a fix for the blu ray 720p issue as other blu ray players can do it so fingers crossed.

so your going to try the 2007fpw you have spare?

it would be great if you could let me know if the cable works on the older 2005fpw, because if it does it would be likely it works on the 2405fpw too.

please try both monitors and get back to me on it, would be most apreciated..

thanks.

good find, i was scanning the hardforum like a madman, could not find anything on the older 2005 supporting the ps3 though, 2007 seams 99.9% because it says on dell resellers and some online reviews that the 2007fpw and the 2407fpw have hdcp, so 720 on the 20 inch should be a given.

EDIT: dont want to derail the thread, but DAMN! that 27 inch dell monitor is sexy.

yes you do...because it won't transport the video signal if the monitor is not HDCP compliant. So unless you don't want to use your monitor to play your PS3, then you DO need to worry about HDCP.

yea, i cant seam to get a straight yes or no, some websites/forums say yes, some say no.

id figure its a big no for the 05' models since its confirmed they dont have HDCP, im wondering if i can get some kind of Component-VGA adaptor though, the ps3 menu seams to suggest it can output 1080p over component, its just that my monitor does not accept it, if i can convert the signal to vga maybe, i can get the full 1080p via my vga connection.

It's very simple. You need HDCP to use a computer monitor with the ps3.
