Hi; I'm also an adult with an income, and I had to put a lot of thought into the 360/PS3 issue. I settled on a PS3 because the BluRay capabilities were just as important to me as having a next-gen console. I've got a Wii too, for the fam, but I never play it aside from my power run through Mario Galaxy or when friends come over for some Brawl matches (popped in Twilight Princess the other day, but noted it still sucks, so played something else instead). When Left4Dead came out I had a brief moment when I wanted to buy a 360 just to complete the set, but I decided against it. I also set up a 2TB external drive as a media drive on my PS3. I've got all my TV shows and movies ripped to it and can watch it from the PS3 without getting off the couch. It's the pinnacle of lazy deliciousness. The Box might be able to do that too, I don't know.
On exclusives: I really don't like MGS. Just isn't my thing. I haven't played 4, but a couple of the guys I work with have been describing it to me and I'd say it'd be worth it. Uncharted sucks; own it, beat it. It's Tomb Raider lite, easy as pie, and after you blaze through the 5 - 6 hours worth of gaming it provides, that's it. Games shouldn't cost 10 dollars an hour in my opinion. LBP is great too, but it's something I would rent or try at a friend's before basing a purchase on it. I haven't played Resistance yet, but I'm going to snag it on my way home from work today. I expect it will be excellent. That being said, it has counterparts on the Box.
If you have a solid PC rig (I'm a Mac guy now), I'd say any game that is released for both consoles and PC should be obtained for PC. Fallout is a perfect example. I don't know if Beth released a construction set like they did for Morrowind, but back in the days when I was a serious PC gamer, I played through Morrowind multiple times with extensive patching. It was like a different game every time... Some really cool, major changes. You won't find that on PS3 DLC unless it's as official patch content.
Were I you, I wouldn't waste such a gift on a PS3. I love my PS3, and wouldn't trade it for the world. I have no regrets about buying it over a 360 (well, maybe a brief Left4Dead twinge, but I'll get over it). To truly take advantage of BluRay, you need a serious TV; in my opinion, 1080p doesn't really stand out from 720p unless you're in the 50inch+ range. But just buying/getting-it-as-a-gift for a couple exclusive games is lame; establish some priorities and go with them, or get some more diverse hobbies.
