It was only a few years ago that the Vita came bursting onto the scene, and I got one several months after launch. I really enjoyed the system, though it had some serious setbacks such as short games and an expensive memory card, and inconsistent online store prices.

I'd recently been thinking more about the Vita and how I really enjoyed it as a handheld, and thought it might be nice to get one again since it has been a few years, and the pricing has presumably changed by now. I appreciated the Vita for its decent hardware, its integration with my PSN account and purchases, and some original titles early on that were fun.

Knew the system was not doing well, but was slightly surprised to see that there was no longer a section for the Vita at my local Gamestop. A few weeks ago, I had seen one at a different Gamestop under 2 hours away. I'm not sure if this means that Gamestop now considers the Vita to be dead, or if it means that the system just wasn't selling well enough for that location to keep it around.

On the whole, I'm aware that things aren't looking good for the Vita, and that it never quite lived up to its potential. But it seemed like it had a nice niche library with a lot of eclectic offerings, and I was hoping that Sony wouldn't give up on the handheld front after creating such a nice piece of tech.

Has anyone heard much about the Vita's discontinuation or phasing-out?

And, is it still worth it to give the Vita a chance, in 2016?

@Ovirew: Well the landscape has shifted from Western support to Japanese support. So we have mainly Japanese AAA games and a crap load of Indie games. If you like anime rpg's, fighting games, adventure games and Indie games then it's definitely worth it. I completely changed my library from Western games to Japanese too, hell, I've actually become a pretty big Otaku lately because of it and I just can't stop buying more!

So, the support is still there. It's just mostly Japanese stuff and that support is only on the PSN store. So make sure you have a PSN account, good WiFi and a beefy memory stick for the space you'll need. The stores have pretty much abandoned ship by now. Which is funny because I can easily find PS Vitas for sale but zero chance on finding games for it!

Only consider getting a Vita based off its current library because I don't expect much else significant to release for it. I've actually broadened by interests in genres by owning a Vita since there's hardly been any AAA games of genres I normally play on it. For me, I think it's mostly only going to be useful for visual novels and JRPGs at this point. I still occasionally find other small games to play on it, but most of these games can usually be easily played elsewhere. That said, I still enjoy my Vita and I'm glad I got one, but I wouldn't be surprised if it got officially discontinued in the near future.

The PSvita is officially dead in North America and Pal regions. But I the Asian region Games are still being released, Unless you are into JRPG then the PSvita is dead. Worldwide PSvita has sold 13.5 million systems. Since December 17th 2011. A dismal amount so Sony has given up on the PSvita except in Japan. Everywhere else PSvita is done and over with.

It sucks, because I honestly really love my Vita :(

Guess I still have Japanese games.

Yes, get a Vita if you're interested in

  • Entire digital PS1 library
  • Entire digital PSP library
  • Entire Vita library to this point
  • Mostly Japanese games with smaller games for American/European audiences.

For me it's an RPG and puzzle game machine with the occasional side scroller. It has decades worth of Final Fantasy games, Disgeaea, Resident Evil, etc.

It's my favorite portable but I understand it's limitations and what it does best is what I want it for.

Vita is pretty well a dead system to me. The new Telltale Walking Dead isn't even on it.

It's Sony's Dreamcast but with a far worse library. Like DC to Sega, it will probably be Sony's last handheld.

Dead in terms of new support? Yes. Dead in terms of games to play on it? No, but it's up to you. Personally, I never think a particular console/handheld is "dead". You can always play the games already available for the system.

I still have plenty of games to play on my Vita. There's just nothing new on the horizon.
