I got a ps3 and am trying to compare the fan sound with others out there.

I don't hear a thing when I'm playing games, but it sure does shoot out a lot of heat from the right side though.BlueAtlas
Mine too. A lot of heat on the right-side, rights-side on the bottom area, and also in the back right-side area. The left side is pretty cool though.

Yeah that's what I really hate about the PS3 it chugs out too much heat. After an hour or two of gaming the temperature in my room jumps up at least 5 to 10 degrees, and that doesn't really help because it already gets really hot in the summer where I live.

After reading yours and everyone elses about the heat, I guess mine is normal. And I rather the ps3 dish out that heat instead of keeping it inside. At least I now know that fan is working normalas it should be.
I read on other post (before) that they say it is better at dissipating heat if itisstandingvertical. Mine is horizontal. I haven't try vertical cause I am afraid someone may knock it over.

The PS3 will disapate heat much faster when it's vertical. I have mine sitting in a cabinet that has little space around it but I found that with the console sitting vertical it stays a lot cooler (the fan never goes above the second speed).
Quite. If I move the PS3 while cleaning it. The vents can get covered by the carpet and the fan goes on high. But after I put the PS3 back in it's place, it returns back to the normal quite.I got a ps3 and am trying to compare the fan sound with others out there.

I dunno really. My PS3 is like 7-8 feet away from me (it's in my room), so I can't compare that to say playing in my living room.
It is pretty quiet though, quieter than my 360/laptop.
I can hear my one in the living room a little, but can't hear my 1 in my bedroom at all. Both are still quieter than the 360 I Ebayed. casey7672
hells yeah
For some strange reason mine is very loud even though it is quite cool. After about a minute of being silent, the fan will kick into full gear. Also when it reads a game for example Rainbow Six it sounds like an engine ... well not that loud but almost as loud as an xbox 360. Blazinazn281
is your room dead silent?
Mine is not dead silent but it is never loud. There are a couple things to take into consideration here were your PS3 Sits and how dusty the room is. I have mine out in the open so it has plenty of air flow. I know this may sound dumb but don't put it boxed in somewhere because your PS3 works just like a computer it can only get as cool as the room temperature and if you have your PS3 on a book case more than likely your system is pushing out hot air and taking that hot air right back in when it tries to cool of the system causing your fans to overwork. The dust comes into play when the dust gets stuck inside your system and lays on your hardware. This will act sorta like a blanket and your PS3 will warm up faster because of the blanket covering your hardware. I would give your system about 3 to 6 inches on all sides if you can and make sure that is not surrounded by walls like in a T.V. cabinet. One other thing you can use to help take more air in and push air out faster is the NYKO Intercooler Cooling Device for PlayStation 3 i bought mine at Best Buy for 30 dollars.
