Sony is just selling the console as long as people are buying it, it's not taking any focus away from the PS3. It's not like Sony are making new games for it.

PS2 sold over 40k in the US in January, as long as people buy it, there's no reason for Sony to stop making them.

I believe this is their last year according to Sony's ten year cycle. I doubt that they will stop making ps2 cause its still selling pretty well. I believe the total sales is about 137 or 138 million.

they just say they'll support it for at least 10 years, nothing about them supporting it for no more than 10 years.

The PS2 still sells a good bit. The PSP sells pretty good in Japan. The PSP is actually a good system despite the negativity towards it. It's got Resstance, Ratchet, Final Fantasy, Wild Arms etc. The go is failing because no one is going to pay double what the older version costs since it does not hardly anything new. Then again Sony was probably forced into charging so much since retailers won't make any money off of selling games.

I say if they can have 3 systems out that sell good for them. The PS2 might go longer than 10 years. They stopped selling PS1 games in 05 because no one bought the older games anymore because everyone had PS2's. The PS3 is just now starting to have a good reputation by the mainstream. The PS3 is in third place if you want to go by sales and rankings and it probably won't get out of it either. North America is very much 360 based and Wii based. Japan is a very small market. The PS3 outsells 360 in Europe but the 360 still does pretty well.

Sony at this point needs to have as much out as it can have. They are just starting to get into the black once again.

To be honest, PS2/PSP sales are what kept Sony from ending up like Dreamcast a couple years ago when they had the $599 price tag on the system. If I were you, I wouldn't rush them getting rid of the 2 systems, as Sony is still till this day losing money on each ps3 system sold. (I believe its like $30 or something.)

Can they afford to drop them though? That is the real question. When the transition from PS1 to PS2 came about, there was no reason to continue having PS1's in the market, because the PS2 could play all the PS1 games, and you could use your accessories, memory card(s) and such. Some things were sadly incompatible (I still say that the Gameshark Pro that used the parallel port on the back of original PS1's was a boon to the console, and the GunCon), but usually there was either an adapter available, or an updated version of the product that would work. This time around... Sony neutered current PS3's so that you can't play your existing PS2 collection. And has shown no interest in improving BC on current, capable units, or restoring BC for neutered units. So what is a player who's already built up an impressive PS2 library supposed to do when (not if) their PS2 falls apart? Sony could force them to migrate by stopping manufacturing, but without some way of enabling them to play their classics that they've bought on their hard-earned dollar, they won't be buying willingly. And who knows how many are still playing on standard def TV's? So along with the PS3 (if they haven't already), would mean purchasing a new, compliant HDTV, and cabling. The more I think about the desperate nature of the situation for it, the more of a conundrum it becomes. And the more grateful I am that I finally have one working 60GB model.

I disagree Sony should not drop the PSP it's still doing well and Sony are planning more games to come out on that system like Modnation Racers, Konami's MGS Peace Walker which I bet more people will be buying the PSP just for that game. As for PS2 a lot of people still use that console and it's still selling so why would Sony drop something that'ssuccessfulwhen it's still making money. Just because you think they should be dropped doesn't mean they should be not everyone can afford a PS3 that why others stick with the PS2 or PSP. If you hadn't noticed Sony focused on the PS3 more then ever in 2009 releasing some of the best titles for it. All I have to say about Sony is at least it that company still supports the older consoles while other companies just drop the older consoles for the newer consoles.

i do agree with everyone that the psp does have some good games as i have had a psp for the past three years, i just dont think its the console it could of been, the main two reasons being is that 1. sony has taken hardly no interest ever in advertising it which is quite a shame as you look at the DS with loads of ads and it sells quite well, and second which is piracy, if piracy wasnt an issue on the psp it would be selling like the ps2 was at its peak and you would be seeing many developers pouring loads of money into making great games.
