Okay so I just turned on my PS3 to play some Wipeout Fury and it happened. My PS3 froze and when I turned it back on I get the dreaded yellow light. To be honest I knew it was coming because my PS3 had a strange freeze yesterday and luckily I backed up all of my gamesaves. What happened was that it froze incredibly suddenly and shut itself off within a second and then the red LED's starting flashing until I tapped them. This had never happened before and I knew it was a sign of things to come.

I bought my PS3 around 20 months ago and have the 40GB version upgraded to 320GB. I take care of my PS3 like no one else, trust me. This is also my first failed console and I'm stunned. Luckily I bought the extended 3 year warranty with it but now I'm just annoyed that I'm gonna have to redownload everything. Also, can anyone tell me if it will be safe to insert my old HDD into my new PS3? I know some YLOD's refer to HDD failure but is there any way to find out.

There is no way in hell my PS3 overheated, I clean the vents A LOT and keep it very well ventilated. I take care of it extremely well so I suspect this issue is totally random and can happen to anyone! Be warned fellow PS3 owners, NO ONE is safe!

I beleave it will work for a couple minutes then break a couple times. I wouldn't put any disks in there. Sorry to hear about your luck.

Yeah ok I think my PS3 is definitely screwed. It worked again after and then the screen went insane with blue and white lines and it got the YLOD again! I tried it again and the same thing happens. It works for like a minute and then it YLOD's itself! Has anyone else heard of this?

Yeah you're right I just tried it again and nothing now, oh well... I'm just gonna have to go and get my replacement and shell out for a new hard drive again.

My ps3 was doing that when I was trying to get it to work with my hdmi cable. It would just completely shut off whenever I turned it on and then start blinking red till I hit the button. Works fine on standard component cables.

Still wont work with hdmi.

I live in the UK and I bought it from GAME with 3 year warranty and I'm pretty sure that I'll just be able to trade it for a new one, but like I said I've never had a console fail on me before so I'm not entirely sure. About the hard drive, I've read online that the YLOD can indicate a failed hard drive as well as other system related faults. I'm not so sure if I wanna put the same HDD in the new PS3 but then again I don't wanna throw away a perfectly good 320GB HDD, anyone got any advice on how I can tell if its messed up or not?

I just tried putting in the original 40GB hard drive and no luck, I guess that means the hard drive isn't the problem so hopefully the 320GB one will work in the replacement.

The YLOD is a result of the solder that bonds the chipsets to the motherboard cracking and seperating from the motherboard this can easily be repaired with a simple reflow of the chipsets or in really bad cases a total reball of the chipsets. The reason I believe this happens is in the assembly process too much thermal compound is applied to the chipsets creating problems with the system regulating its temperature.

I can fix this issue.

I don't wanna drag this topic on but I thought I might aswell tell you guys what happened. I contacted the store and they're gonna pick it up for repairs, this can take up to 10 days! If they can't fix it I'll get a brand new one for free. The frustrating thing is that the PS3 is the hub of my media centre, without it I might aswell not even have a TV.

Thats completely irrelevant buddy, I've just discovered that this issue is totally out of our control. My PS3 is kept spotless at all times, I take very good care of my things, hence this being my first failed console EVER. Its just a random error and can happen at any time. Of course you should still clean the vents, but don't expect that to prevent it from happening.

Huh, that sucks. These things just happen. No console is made perfect, some individual ones will have problems and such.
