Well unlike the first one this one has far more forgiving controls, a camera and freedom of movement. You can basically play this game like a shooter, you don't have to hide unlike the other games. However when it comes to the story you can read about it, but you will still probably be confused, the game has its own lingo that you need to be aware of as well.

haha maybe if someone had a few hours to spare to write all that stuff, because a jist for this game is very very long. Sorry your likely going to have to look into yourself or hope a very generous person finds this topic and has a ton of time on their hands.

oh yea the game well crafted in both story and gameplay. maybe you wont get as much out of the story and findit a little confusing at times but it'll be exciting noneoftheless.

I never played any MGS series either but bought MSG4. I didn't like it at all, so after a week of trying to like it I let my friend who's never played any previous MGS games either and he had it for about two weeks and he hated it. Just to deep, not knowing ANY characters I mean I had no clue when long cutscenes started what was happening or the story. The graphics are nice n all. I traded it in EB Games for after about 3 weeks.

skip the cut scenes and you should still have a great time. the reason why you should skip the cut scenes is to prevent you from getting a brain tumor.

EXACTLY... sadly this game is one for the fans of Metal Gear Solid... to those people that have been following this game for the past 20 years....

Don't get it because of the hype or anything... I say if you want to get the most our of MGS4 you HAVE toplay the other 3 games...HAVE TO

I mean even if MGS4 got a 3 pt game rating I would still get it no matter what cause I needed closure... shyt most MGS players needed closure. We have been following this... well I have been following this story since nintendo... and I am so glad it had a fitting end. So, with that being said and listening to the post I have quoted I say you will not like the game... especially if you can not even beat the first Metal Gear Solid game... if getting past some guards made you mad then please save your money man.

You can always download the MGS Database off the PSN store. Get the back story and characters through that. Then, when you've played and seen/heard things in the game, more will be unlocked in the database. VERY good way to see the tree's of relationships.

I recommend that you watch full playthroughs (with cutscenes and important codec) of all 3 games on youtube to get the most out of MGS4. If you don't want to put in the time - try a simple summary and hope for the best. Last resort is just to play it anyway and enjoy the ride - it is a must play from a gameplay standpoint imo. You'll probably like the gameplay , gadgets , weapons , cqc , graphics , sound , and like some of the cutscenes eventhough you won't know what is going on and who they are exactly.

I have 3 friends that loved it and had never played any of the MG series at all, just keep an open mind and listen to the story. Maybe not the codecs but atleast the cutscenes, their really that long to include new comers to the series, aswell as tie up loose ends. I had only played the MGS on the ps1 I think and I understood most if not all of the game by the time the end came around.

What I did prior to playing it I watched the summaries of the series on Youtube, that came in quite handy actually.

Here is part 1 of a 6 part series over view of the series on Youtube the other parts are there aswell :)

ehh I guess you could play through mgs4, just skipping the cutscenes. But I dont think you will the full experince of the game since the story will not do much for you. Why not try picking up mgs1, mgs2. mgs3? Probably wont be that expensive. Or you could just go on wikipedia and read about 1-3, but wouldnt it be mgs3, mgs1, mgs2, then mgs4? But I'd definitely pick it up no matter what.

it's not orson wells let's put it that way, just play it it's a game, most people don't understand the story anyway. I only play it for it's gameplay, if i thought the gameplay was rubbish i would of stopped at one.

dood, honestly, the first few gaurds of mgs1 are the HARDEST part of the game. i say this because when you pick it up for the first time, this game has a major learning curve. knowing how the gaurds react, knowing how to respond during fights, hell utilizing the camera even takes experience. thats why this is the hardest part. cuz you have no experience at this point. when i first picked it up eons ago, i was stuck there forever. my heart kept pumping and it was really really intense trying not to get spotted. after you pass those gaurds tho, you'll become hooked. trust me, and invest time into this game. its one of my fav games ever. definately surpassing mgs4 imho

I never played any of the other metal gear games, and I loved MGS4. I watched every cut scene too, and was able to basically put everything together that had happened in the previous games by really listening to everything that got said. I want to get the other ones now, but I figure I might be a little let down since this one is supposedly the best.

That is perverse! Don't let anyone know you haven't played any MGS game! It's gonna be okay... Also, to Beastwood above, I applaud your efforts to follow the Metal Gear saga through 4's cutscenes, but trust me when I say the story is something which needs to be experienced first-hand. First, just because with a plot so complex you're bound to have holes. Second, the story telling is much better in the games themselves than the majority of the cutscene summaries in 4.
