I have a 1080p 40 inch hdtv and when i play games like the darkness on it i get a hell of a lot of jaggies.
Does any1 no how to get rid of em?

dude you have a 1080p HDtv and the darkness only suppports 720p so i think the resolution was downgraded to 460p. You need to adjust the picture somehow.I have a 1080p 40 inch hdtv and when i play games like the darkness on it i get a hell of a lot of jaggies.

You can't...its not like a PC game where you can change the AA settings...
umm actually you can change the resolution which the PS3 outputs under display settings
I wouldn't say piss poor development, in fact in a comparison against the "other console" PS3's looks better, it must be some settings or something.

Wrong. 460p? You mean 480p, and he was running it at 720p

Changing a resolution does not add AA...so no you cannot change AA on a console game, its something that is programmed into the game.
does a any1 think a hdmi 1.3 cable will sort it out
Chris898
I wish people would understand that there is no "1.3 HDMI" cable. the current cables are all tested at a bandwidth that will work with 1.3 HDMI. therefore, all HDMI cables on the market are 1.3 HDMI compliant because they can support the upgraded bandwidth.

And even to add to that, you need a TV that has HDMI 1.3 inputs...
jip I tried the demo And i thought the amount of jaggies was ridiculous ps1 like ridiculous.The_Tombo
So true, I rented it 2 weeks ago and I thought man this looks like a first gen ps2 title. The game is quite good, but I couldn't really immerse myself into the world because of the jaggies. The lighting is great too but then you realize those jaggies again and to me it became a distraction. If you can overlook the jaggies then you'll enjoy it....

The Darkness does have a lot jaggies. It ruined the game for me. You can probably lower down the shapness to make it less jaggy. ;)
i just finshed playing the Darkness demo on 360. to be honest: it looks much better than the PS3 version. The ps3 version just has a lot of jaggies. it makes playing the game less immersive(cause you'll be staring at jaggies....).
Developpers are having difficulties with Anti Aliassing on PS3. Appearently Guerilla found a way to do 4 x AA in kilzzone 2, and according to hands on reports succesfully eliminating all jaggies with that...
Devs are not having any problems with it, they;re simply choosing not to use it so they dont waste the systems time on removing a small detail when it could be adding much more to the scene.i just finshed playing the Darkness demo on 360. to be honest: it looks much better than the PS3 version. eh.. no, they did choose to do it in the 360 version but didn't choose to do it in the PS3 version... makes no sense.
listen, you think i'm bashing the PS3.. i'm not. there are issues with PS3 (AA, textures, etc.) and some developers are better in dealing with those issues, often with help from Sony.
[QUOTE="furtherfan"]>eh.. no, they did choose to do it in the 360 version but didn't choose to do it in the PS3 version... makes no sense.teebeenz360 gets AA free, PS3 doesnt.
the 360 has AA in it yes. but it's not always automaticly used. it's not just the darkness.... but i guess you feel this as a personal thing so i'll stop here. i'm sorry, the PS3 is perfect. a developers dream come true.
But I have a teeny TV and I don't get any jaggies with my PS3. It's hung before though and I've tried this experiment. I wrapped a towel around it and let it run for 15 minutes. It overheats so much that it actually repairs the problem! It worked. Oh and I've had it for 2 years and it still gives out that new console smell. I wonder if there's something else wrong with it...:?
the 360 has AA in it yes. but it's not always automaticly used.furtherfanIt gets it for free, it comes at not cost to the systems processing, they can use it whenever they want. On the PS3 however it takes time to do and so by using it they have to cut out other things to make up for it.
Are most 360 AND PS3 games less jaggy on standard TV's???
I've seen games such as Forza Motorsport 2looking HORRIBLE at 720p, but it looks just fine on a standard TV.

Use your jaggy stick to beat them off the screen.

that is not true. Heavenly Sword uses AA...what did they cut out?

true, they CAN use it.
But Killzone 2 proves that they can use fullscreen AA (on PS3) and not cut on anything. they are the first to really figured this thig out together with Sony

Adding FSAA was part of their design goal as that method of rednering typicaly doesnt have AA. The rendering system they have uses radicaly less bandwidth so there is more room for data, including AA. This is something the other engines strugle with.

maybe/ hopefully they will share their knowledge.

im using official sony hdmi cables 1.3vi get no jaggies but with cheap ones i do
Thanks makes even less sense. There is no overall quality difference between HDMI cables, a $300 versus a $5 one looks 100% the same. Only difference that can happen is if the cable is bad to begin with, you'd get sparkles or total picture breakup, no way poor quality control or other defects can directly lower sharpness or overall quality and some how effect jaggies appearance. If again the cable was not 100% picture quality, then it's too long of a run or a defect.
And 1.3 has nothing to do with changing anything outputted today. There is no such thing as a 1.3 cable spefcifc. You have to test a cable to qualify to support all 1.3 features, so even an existing HDMI cable might pass the tests. There's no special change, the main thing to help pass the 1.03 tests is to have thicker gauges wires to allow more bandwidth, then you can label it as 1.3 certified, but the cable could also be used on 1.1 too. Thus, no real difference happens to the picture quality unless you did some 24bit deep color game that doesn't exist, and only tvs that support deep color are just hitting the market slowly. Only other thing about 1.3 is audio output.

Did someone say the game can run at 1080p, not uspcaled right? If so, are you able to set it to that, as the larger the resolution the smaller the jaggies should appear. But yes, the game doesn't seem to have any AA to smooth them, nor motion blur (from what I saw in a side by side console test video)
Also, make sure your tv is not set to some vivid or sports mode, that will usually involve tons of extra sharpening that can make jaggies wrose and edge ringing. If your tv does have modes like Sports, Movie, Standard, and so on, try movie, usually the sharpness is lower. If there is a game mode, that usually disables tons of the extra enhancements that make jaggies worse. Or just lower sharpness if you don't have those presets to choose from.

umm actually you can change the resolution which the PS3 outputs under display settings
I wouldn't say piss poor development, in fact in a comparison against the "other console" PS3's looks better, it must be some settings or something.
I read otherwise.
