How long must it charge for the first charge? It's a piano black Slim, and I plugged it in an hour or two ago. So does it need to be completely charged before it is safe to turn it on?

When you get the psp slim, the battery is only half way charged. The manuel says to charge it before using it for the first time. It takes 2 hours and 20 minutes for it charge completely.

charging it fully and then playing it is always better. :)

and always charge it fully before playing it. i mean only charge it if the battery gets low. it will make your battery last longer :)

This isn't true, and it is a common misconception that people have. Lithium-ion batteries are made to be charged and charged often. Here's a tip taken directly from BatteryUniverse.com:

"Avoid frequent full discharges because this puts additional strain on the battery. Several partial discharges with frequent recharges are better for lithium-ion than one deep one. Recharging a partially charged lithium-ion does not cause harm because there is no memory. (In this respect, lithium-ion differs from nickel-based batteries.) Short battery life in a laptop is mainly cause by heat rather than charge / discharge patterns."

Drain the battery until it is at one bar and try charging it up again. Maybe you have to get another battery.
