its like that on any hardrive
you never get the full space the hard drive has printed on the box
usually on a normal computer hd theres 2-3 gbs missing
and the 360 also has like 5-7 gigs missing, and its only a 20gb. but you can get rid of 2-3 of those. but not with the ps3 that i've heard. just consider urself lucky you have more room. i ran outta room on my 360 months agoGokuja
the missing 7 gbs on the 360 i think is used for emulation for BC
the bigger the hd, the larger the missing space will be, at least on most hd's i;'ve seen
FAT32 used on PS3 don't format the entire drive, just like all PC HDdrives labeled 60 gb is never 60 it's always around 55, so your really only missing 10 gb. I assume the OS, and game download takes up 10 gb. pimperjones
What he said!!!! lol

You are right. If you will check the hard drive in your PC, you may have bought it thinking that you were getting 320GB, but if you right click on the drive and check properties, you may find that you only have 295GB or so to play around with.
I currently have about 40GB left on my PS3. That is with the GTHD Demo, Blast Factor Demo, Motorstorm Demo, and the Warhawk trailer. Also, I have 3 PS2 memory cards and 4 PSOne memory cards transferred to the hard drive. And not to mention two firmware and two game patches (Call of Duty 3 and R: FoM) which I am positive are probably saved there. I also have had an Xbox360 for about a year now, and out of the box, it only had like 13GB of actual storage, even though it was sold as 20GB. Currently, I have about 4GB left on it.
Hope this helps :-)

everything except firmware updates are on the hd
the firmware and the ps3 os are stored seperately from the hd
thats why when you swap out the ps3 hd, you can still format it using the ps3
My computer harddrive is missing 10 GBs. Even though I know it really isn't missing but it is just a 10GB hidden partition that has the full factory settings on it so that if I ever need to reformat my computer, I can do it straight off the harddrive.
The 10GB the ps3 is missing (45/55) is probably just space reserved for the system to use to store whatever it needs to store.
As for having 55 GB rather then 60 GB. That is actually due to a problem with no standard in expressing what a GB is. A real GB to a computer is 2^30 which is in base 2, but when selling a hard drive to the public, they like to use 10^9 as which is expressed in base 10 since humans think in base 10.
2^30 = 1073741824 while 10^9 is 1000000000, with a difference of 73741824. Since computers only talk in binary, when expressing space they use base 2, but when selling you a computer, people like to use base 10. So in reality, if you get a 1GB harddrive, you are actually going to be missing 73 MB. Multiply 73MB by 60, you will see you are missing around 4.3GB, which is makes it go down to 55.
So yea, you are getting a 60GB harddrive when you calculate it using base 10, but only a 55GB harddrive if you calculate it using base 2 like a computer does.
