Only needs HDMI. Should detect it automatically. Do you get a picture with the HDMI? DeathtransitAre you talking about when you try to transfer it, no I didn't get a picture right away with the HDMI cable. And if anybody is confuse tell me what you did when you got your HDMI cable for the PS3 (like how you transfered it). Thanks again everybody.

O_O still confused with what ur doin...if u have the composite cables also hooked in u dont need to do that, u just have only ur hdmi, turn ur ps3 on and than hold down the power button till u hear like 3 beeps, which autodetect the resolution settings(need someone to confirm that's how u do it though)

Try restarting the Ps3 so it detects the HDMI cable, maybe.
The console should automatically detect the HDMI cable. Of course, the HDMI cable has to be plugged into the PS3 console before you turn its power on.
To make it clear for you, what I did with my PS3 was:
1. with the PS3's power OFF, connect it to the TV via HDMI cable
2. connect the power cable to the PS3 and then to the wall power outlet
3. connect the sixaxis controller to the PS3 console via USB cable (to charge it)
4. turn the PS3 on
5. update the system firmware via USB removable memory device
And NO! You don't need the video cables that come with the system. You get both image and sound with one single HDMI cable.
You can download the firmware directly with your PS3 (if it's hooked up to the internet). OR if you have a flash drive/memory card/external hard drive, you can download the firmware via internet on your computer, then transfer the firmware to your flash drive. And you plug the flash drive device into your PS3; go to "Settings" --> "System Update" --> "Update via Storage Media."
Hope this helps.
for #5 do you mean the system update? I didn't update my system yet and I tryed turning it on with ONLY the HDMI cable and the power cord, but I didn't see or hear anything. However, I have only heard something on a different video output. How do you know which video its on?CrazyGamer9163like i said, it wont show u what is on the screen when u have only hdmi plugged in UNLESS you holddown the powerbutton while turning it on, like others have said. you will hear like 3 beeps and it will detect the hdmi
Yes, I meant "system update."
Sometimes a system update will help fix problems with settings, so I think it's worth a try.
Don't panic.

sakuranoame
this should work
PSN:jamsk8er
add me
Then I got stuck. It wouldn't switch. They should really tell you on the HDMI cable how to do it and on the PS3 book on how to do it but have it really simple and easy.CrazyGamer9163
i just got my ps3 2 days ago. when hooked my hdmi cable up it said the wait for 30 seconds...my ps3 did all the work...it set itself up.
This is what I tryed doing on my PS3 with the HDMI cable: 1. I went to settings. 2. Then I went to display settings. 3. Then I went to video output settings (the first one on the top of the list). 4. I then scrolled up to select the connection HDMI. 5. It said some stuff like " The screen will go blank for 30 seconds" and some other stuff. CrazyGamer9163Ok ater the 5th step you need to switch your TV to the HDMI display(usually by pressing the VCR/TV button on the remote control). The reason you dont see anything for 30 seconds is because the PS3 has switched to the HDMI display while you are still set on the component display.

I tryed that it didn't work. If your still confused, tell me exactly what YOU did when you got the HDMI cable and/or your ps3.CrazyGamer9163
Here is what i did. THis is what sony recommends doing. follow the instruction in the handbook thing that comes with the ps3
1. Uplug the power source from ps3 completely
2. plug in your HDMI cable into ps3
3. take other end and plug into your tv
4.plug power source back into ps3
5. turn on ps3 and tv and your ps3 will boot up and it should go automatically to HDMI settings
it will ask you stuff like "do you want optimal settings" and stuff like that. if that doesnt work dont know what will
OMG you bought Assasins Creed NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO that game sucks the big one.... Get rid of it and get COD4 or DMC4 when it comes out in afew days time....delaystation3I like assassin's creed a lot. I just got COD4 on Sunday and I like that game a lot too.
