I got a PS3 a little over a week ago (loving it) and I've been playing COD MW2 online a lot. But I cannot go a single game without muting someone. I am not muting them because they are squealing over their mic, no, I am muting them because their mic is picking up every little sound made in their current room. Breathing, sighs, noise from the game, people talking in the background, and random feedback from the mic.

But often I have to mute several people for the same reasons. Are they just using crappy bluetooth headsets? Is there a way to set the sensitivity of the mic so it only picks up louder sounds (a la most PC games) and people just don't know how?

I have played a few games with people who used mics and they sounded fine, but by and large the majority of the time I have to mute anyone using a mic. On XBL I muted the annoying people, now on PSN I'm having to mute people with annoying mics!

I do not have a mic yet, I was thinking about buying this. So any opinions on that also would be great!

In accessory settings you can change it - that, and people buy cheap headsets. If you want a good headset, just get the offical one. It works perfectly.

Yes, there's a mic level in the XMB. I've got mine turned all the way down to the lowest level. I haven't had too much trouble with people like you said, but you should just tell them to turn their mics down, they probably don't know.

The official Sony headset you're looking at is good, but of course any bluetooth headset will work, and you don't have to spend that much money to get a decent one.

I have the official headset and when I go into the settings to change the levels, I can hear loads of background noise. Even if I press a button on the controller it picks it up, I tried turning it down and it still sounds the same.

I recently talked to a friend who has the official headset, and I could hear everything in his background too.

I just tried to change the levels again but everything apart from 3 is disabled

I haven't really notice the annoying mics problem, the only game I mute people because of the background noise was in Socom, when their was a baby crying in the background

There is also an in game option called voice volume I think. Turn that down or up. It's very convenient :)

A lot of people also use their eye toys as their mics then set everyone else's voice to come out of the tv.

This makes a lot of sense. I mute these people usually. If it isn't people using the eye toys as their mics (silly nubs) it usually has something to do with people buying trash headsets. They think they are cool saving 10 bucks. What they don't realise is that their mics blow.

Every time I game with friends who have the official ps3 headset there is ZERO problem. In fact, it is essentially like talking to someone over the phone.

actually using a ps eye is often better than using a bt headset. as the ps3 eye has a neat feature where it cancels out the sound coming from your tv (aparently it a combination of the 4 mic array being able to pin point where sounds are coming from and also as its connected to the ps3 the ps3 knows what sound its outputting through the tv speakers and cancels it out, really quite clever ;p) problem is with bt headsets picking up tv sounds as they cant cancel it out. the lower the quality the worst as well obviously.

I definitely disagree with the eye being better than a bt headset. So what if it cancles tv sound, you still get all the ambient noises in the room and is quite annoying.

I just got my PS3 last week and too have been playing MW2. I bought the official playstation mic from sony. It still picks up a lot of ambient noise and whenever any game sounds happen the mic picks it up. The sensitivity is locked in at 3 and unable to change it. Apparently if you disable the mic you can change it, then when you enable it again it will hold the level you chose. I'm hoping that fixes my problem and I didn't pay $50 to end up being one of those people everyone hates.

So far that HQ noise cancelling thing doesn't seem so great.
