I thought the broad outline of the story was fine, but man the dialog is mega cheezy and overdone. Some of the cutscenes go on forever with endless jibberish. Its like watching a filibuster on CSPAN. Some parts are so cheezy, I actually wanted to punch hideo kojima in the face.
I think it was good on ideas, poor on writing, very poor on editing the script. If it were made into a movie with the same script, the movie would be known as one of the worst of all time.
I have no idea why so many gamers think the story is so great. Perhaps because they are culturally impoverished gamers who never finished a classic novel in their life.
Its still an awesome game though. One of the best ever.

[/QUOTE It is so great because many gamers grew up with the adventures of Solid Snake.Agreed. A lot of people think its overdone because they didn't play the other games. If they had they'd understand that the game needed every sentence. If not it wouldn't have answered all the questions it had to answer and still be a coherent story of its own. Seriously, how are people who have never played the rest of the franchise going to wet their pants at the suprise ending if they don't even know anthing about those people? What about Solidus's role in the game? How would they get how effed up that is if they never played MGS2? To get the full experience they definately have to play the other three games. Get the MGS Essentials Collection for $30 at Amazon.com if you want to really enjoy MGS4 to its fullest. Its a great story. People say it is over done but I think it was done they way it needed to. These games are like a movie filled with drama and suspense. If anything was taken out then it would have felt like something was missing.

This is the opinion of someone who has not played the rest of the series. If you had you'd understand that that "jibberish" is quite necessary. Where you are listening to them ramble on about stuff that means nothing to you or your current situations the real fans of the series are getting some incredible detail into things we'd been wandering about for an entire decade. And the cheesiness is just one of Kojima's things. That's his sense of humor. And if you played from the beginning you'd come to appreciate it. And, seriously, dude, there's no need to insult MGS fans. I've probably read more novels than you've seen, why? Because I know how to appreciate a good story. ;)ill describe it in one word....EPICreaver-xThis times a millon. But you have to play mgs1-mgs2-mgs3 to fully aprecciate it!

Here is an example of some cheese for you:
Tell Naomi, "I cooked them right."
Gimmie a break...
Or how about the whole wedding thing. I have no doubt in my mind that Hell is an eternity spent watching that abominable scene.
I guess Im expecting too much from a video game story line. After all, it is just a video game. Since when did a game really have a good story. I don't expect much, but it annoys me how everyone acts as if mgs4 were written by Twain or Dostoevsky, when in fact it the writing isn't even par with some of the worst stuff that hollywood puts out.
Lol that's your idea of cheesy...? I guess you must have skipped the following parts:
raiden stopping the vessel with his hand, the Mr. and Mrs. Smith moment, the constant otacon crying, raiden sword fighting with a sword in his mouth, snake crawling in the grass (well not so much cheesy as it was uncomfortable) and lets nor forget liquid shooting the invisible guns looking like he was suffering from a stroke...
ahhh, but it just wouldn't be mgs without scenes like those. Here is an example of some cheese for you:

Ok. Nobody acts like MGS4 is a Mark Twain novel. You'd be stupid to expect such quality from a video game story. However, as far as video game stories do go MGS has the best. Sure, there is cheesey stuff in it. The wedding was a little over the top, but they wanted to end the series on as high a note as they could. What's not happy about a wedding? lol Anyway, the MGS story is far superior to a lot of hollywood garbage. I prefer it to almost any Sci-fi movie I've seen in the past 20 years. Seriously, who are you kidding? Here is an example of some cheese for you:

You'r like man this game is so awesome.. So, how did it come to this? I really don't think it'd be the same without the zaniness. Kojima is a total goofball with some bizarre ideas, but MGS just wouldn't be the same if it was all seriousness. Easter eggs, cheesey scenes, goofy villians.... MGS wouldn't be the same with out it. ;)Here is an example of some cheese for you:

...You're comparing video games to novels? I'll just snag one of the most common clichés and apply it here and now. "That's comparing apples to oranges!" You're making an irrelevant comparison AND your contradicting yourself by relentlessly bashing the games plot, and story arc, then you continue to say that it's a good game.

Read my post. I said I get annoyed when other make those comparisons or act like MGS4 was some sort of life changing story (yes I heard that). I said the story wasnt that great. The sci-fi ideas were good. I can say its a good game because even if you ignore the cut scenes or just skip them, its still fun--very fun in fact, even if the story makes me want to waterboard Kojima.
I recommend playing 1, 2 and 3 first for the ultimate gaming experience. Believe me. Its one of the greatest stories ever told.ANIALATOR136
what the man said ^
The story is very very good and very long. For the full experience the previous MGS games are a "must", but there's a big chance you'll be charmed regardless.

MGS is my favorite video game saga. It has the most epic story in video games... period. From the very first game to the very end you'll find some great characters/ villians each with their own overwhelming personality and characteristics. The first game is especially endearing with its awesome villians and their backstories. There are so many questions that arise as you play through each game. MGS4 not only answers those questions it also tells a story of its own. But I'll admit, though you will undoubtably enjoy MGS4 on its own you won't really understand what makes it so awesome without having played the other three. I love the MGS story and its the real thing that sucked me into the series for all these years. And that's not to mention the awesome innovative stealth gameplay. Each game is like a cinematic experience, but when the reels stop spinning its time to cut some throats. Good story... No... Its EPIC!!!!Nephilim83I couldn't have said it better myself...so "ditto" Nephilim :)
you have to play the 1st three since this raps up snake's story. its a final chapter of a saga. just like a movie trilogy if you dont watch the others you will be lost on the last one. tust me play the series in order. the series is on par with hollywood movie. action, humor, emotion and a great cast. the final chapter is really powerful. i really think there was no better way to end one of the greatest videogame storylines of all time
Here's an opinion from a guy who didn't play the first 3 games. I didn't like the story. I didn't understand anything to do with this Big Boss guy or all these different snakes or the patriots or anything. As a result, I found the storyline to be confusing, boring and long winded.
However, the game is worth the money on gameplay alone, and the stealth aspect of it and all of the bosses still make it a fun experience.
If I were you, I'd buy the game, but skip a lot of the cutscenes.

true,100% agreed with you man.
And to the people that like to criticise for watever reasons, you must understand that just like Farscape or Firefly or Slumdog millionaire or Grave of the Fireflies or Berserk or Evangelion or any other work that is the vision of an 'auteur', it is not for everybody.

Oh, and btw, in the context of the story, the line "I cooked them right" carries an immense weight and significance for both Naomi and the overal events. It is an ingeniously alegorical coded message from the prodigy child Sunnyand has more than one hidden meaning.

Really? Cause I just thought it was a bit of cheese, written to make you go "aaaaaw"The plot was all right but I agree that the diaologue was not all that great. It didn't hurt the game too much but I thought the first MGS and the the third were better written.
Meryl I think did a great job in MGS4. However, Snake, Otacon, Raiden, Noami, and Drebin just didn't bring enough to the table so to speak. They could have done better but as everyone else says you can't compare games to novels. Though I would say Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, and Prince of Persia did really well on diaologue.

Even in video games. Not all gamers are insensitive a-holes, y'know. Not suggesting that you are or anything. I'm just saying MGS appeals to a much larger audience than just Call of Duty fans.
