My wife and I were discussing the backwards compatibility on my 20GB PS3 (which just decided to die on meh :( (.

So...we went down to the local Bestbuy and I got an 80GB which I know doesn't have the BC but in explaining why the one I just got doesn't have the BC...even I forgot.

Can someone remind me so I can tell my wife why wwe can not play our old games on the new PS3?

thx in advance

SONY just left it out, i think its as simple as that. they were like "how about no BC", then the other one said "yeh ok". all in japanese though.

Also...

Is there a way to transfer the save data and all that to the new PS3, by usb or whatever, so that I don't lose all my game data...?

Ok, Sony left it out because of production costs, and because "we have a array of exciting new titles like Motorsotrm, Resistance, KZ2, etc...". Yes you can back it up, although you will need a large flash drive, or more perferably a external HDD. Go to system settings, and go to backup utility and follow the onscreen instructions. If theres anymore problems come back to this thread

The 20GB and 60GB had the the PS2's Emotion Engine processor in it, so they removed it in later models to cut costs. That's why the original 80GB can still play many PS2 games via emulation, but they don't always run right, and some won't run at all. As for 40GB, new 80GB, and 160GB models, the system could play the games via emulation, but they removed it so people would buy more PS3 games, and also increase PS2 + memory card sales.

Any idea if SONY would be so gracious as to return the emulation to the newer models?

I don't feel like plugging my PS2 everytime I want to play Persona...

Essentially it would just be a firmware update once they eventually give up on the ps2...right?
