Ok, Killzone 2. Undeniably gearing up to be one of Sony's heavy hitters this year and will most likely boost sales for a short period. But the question remains:

'Why make a sequel to a game which was so woefully average in every aspect that barely anyone gave a **** about it?'

Of course, Kudos for reviving its namesake but still, i'm sure many of you know -in all honesty- that Killzone 2 runs the very real risk of becoming another non-entity plagued by hype and eventually drifting into obscurity under a tide of games which do everything Killzone 2 does, but better.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts.

*Oh and fanboys need not reply, i want objective statements here.

Just because the first one was average does not necessarily mean the second one will be. Sony has put a lot of resources into this one, so give them a chance.

why would the first game make a difference whether this game I'll be good or not?? That was last gen... for example FFVII sucked, but I still ended up getting FFVIII and I one of the greatest games ive ever played. wow I'm going to get flamed for that...

I agree entirely.

Just because the first one "sucked" ( I enjoyed it and realized its missed potential), do you really think that binds the second one to failure aswell? If so, any attempts at posing a valid argument are null because logic clearly is not your strong suit.

If nobody cared about killzone 1 how come it sold as much as it did? also, just because guerilla, an understaffed company with no support from sony made a "good" game that had bugs that took away from it, doesnt mean that later when their company grows 5 times larger and has massive amounts of support from sony, that their next game will be just "good" either. many game franchises started out with mediocre first outings and had widely praised sequels. thats how things go.

Because the concept of the characters with the Red eyes is pretty damn nice. Why not bring it back and hype it into a shambles?

I agree. I never played the first Killzone, but if a company can bring a game that supposedly didn't so well back again and make it into something incredible, that captures my interest even more. I think it's exciting to see how this idea becomes more fully realized on the PS3 years later. It's like the opposite of a movie where the sequel isn't as good as the first... something that actually improves over time. I really like that. Or if there was a band with a first album that tanked, and then they came out with a second album that was a huge hit, I would find that very impressive. Killzone 2 is the Karate Kid coming back to fight for his honor after training with Mister Miyagi.

Wow, I used to think these forums were semi-worthwhile...but that is starting to change. The TC asks for objective responses to an ill-concieved, seemingly biased, foolish topic.

Who the hell cares whether it's a sequel to a game you didn't like (probably never played)? If KZ2 turns out to be stellar, are you going to come back in here whining about its predecessor? I think not...then again, inanity seems to have found sanctuary on these boards, so nothing would surprise me.

But if people didn't post threads like these, where would you find the opportunity to demonstrate your eloquence?

I have a lil' sketch pad where I write random refrains of profundity...so I'll be ok. I can send you a copy of my latest entitled, "Verbosity of Verbage" if you'd like. :P

That's cool! Verbosity of Verbage should be your blog title (if you don't already have one). You could write refrains about video games, which could make your blog very unique and create a lot of traffic if properly advertised.

Yea the first one wasn't good but the second might not be. If the second one isn't good then you can say this when or if they make a 3rd one.

Whoah guys, hold your horses. I never said i 'personally' thought the first one 'sucked'. You just assumed that was my perogative for making this topic and posing the question stated in my first post. As for the statement being 'illogical' or 'ill-advised' that's a completely unfair observation. There are always -at least outside of fanboyism *cough*- two possible answers, in this case i'm aware there's a lot of resentment to those who are quick to pass judgement on KillZone 2 -which by all accounts will be a solid entry into the next gen roster of shooters- however someone has to pose the question -and consequently take the fall for doing so haha-. Anyway, thank you for all your replies, this is actually one of my first posts on the Forums :)

Ah and one last point, i agree with those of you who said that the first game in a series does not necessarily denote the quality of the series as a whole..conversely some franchises don't really deserve to be revived. I understand the first Killzone was something of an achievement for the playstation 2 especially in the wake of Halo on the original xbox but really, it could have been so much better. Lets just hope Killzone 2 reaches the potential it's predecessor should have done.

*No contradictory statements were harmed during the making of this post*

past is past... besides, the first one is not that bad! it's great potential is one of the reasons why they did a sequel, and what matters now is that it looks so amazing and promising! i hope it will meet or even surpass the expectations of fans, critics, PS3 owners, haters, newbies!
