i thought they were mutated on planet Helghan, making themselves immune to that environment.

its when they went back to a human environment that they needed the mask.

On a forum somebody asked about this to motherh, he said back that it was a detail that wasn't very important at the time. It could be a long term effect as you have to be on the planet for several years before effect, or it could be that the developers don't want to give that away as of yet.

It's up for you to decide. I believe that it is irrelevant but it's understandable if you might be more concerned about it.
