I have own a ps2 and a ps3 but I didnt play many games on them (wasnt a huge gamer), and it seems I have missed out on a lot, I basicly only played s1 and s2, and Prince of Persia.

But now that im getting more into gaming, I have come to realize how many awesome games I have missed, to tell you the truth I never even really heard of MGS before last year, and it looks great but do you think I will be totaly lost with the story line when number 4 comes out?

I know the generic answer will be get the ps2 ones, but I really dont have any intrest to, I mean, I just got a ps3, all the free time i got to play games, gos into games I rent for that.

So tell me, is it absolutly nessisary for me to play a select few or does Kojami (i think thats what there called), do i good job of catching ppl up who are new to the series?

Thanks

I don't remember much myself but if I remember correctly. In MGS2 they would do these flashbacks and talk about what happened in the first one. So I dont think you would totally be lost, but no doubt it's always more fun to know the story since you might catch somethin of revelance that might interest u in the sequel(s).

Ya I am sure you could just wiki it as other people said...but also as said you are cheating yourself a bit...If you are interested in the story too you could read a walkthrough that will give you a pretty good idea, or get the games (they are cheap) and just use cheats or a walkthrough to quickly beat the game. Its not like playing through the original games is that much of a hassle, they are great games.

I am sure you could play MGS4 not having played the others just enjoying the gameplay, the story though would probably confuse you and you wouldnt get the full experience of a kojima game, as the story makes up such a big part of it.

Well, if you want to understand the story MGS better, then you will have to spare more time for it. I would really advice you to play the games... A richer experience than just reading about it.

If you enter into MGS4 with no prior experience on MGS, it will rape you in the a$$, and I am not kidding. WIkipedia might help in terms of story, but you need to play all the other games so you know what is up with the gameplay and what makes this games so cool, like the characters and conversations ect. You NEEd to buy the games and play them in release order to enjoy MGS4 to its max.
