This bit of news will probably send the people who actually thought that 9 GB DVD's were enough for this generation of gaming into a frenzy, but as crazy as it sounds, Hideo Kojima recently said that "Blu-Ray is too small for Metal Gear Solid 4."
The current spec of Blu-Ray is only 25 GB, and he wants the newer spec 50 GB Blu-Ray for MGS4. (Not a Dual Layer 25 GB Blu-Ray, but the single layer 50 GB Blu-Ray)

While Hideo Kojima doesn't necesarily care much about HD, he says there's a lot you can do with sound that would fill up a Blu-Ray disc really quickly. On top of everything else in the game this apparently makes the game go way past the 25 GB limit. And Kojima said that he wants to use the new higher spec 50 GB Blu-Ray for MGS4.

Well I guess that confirms it. MGS4 for Xbox 360, an 18 disc box set! lol
On a serious note though, it looks like MGS4 on X360 won't even be possible.

This was reported on a podcast for 1 up yesterday. You can search for it on iTunes. It's called "1 up yours" but it's an hour long. I recorded that part of the pod cast though if anyone wants to listen.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QPELQCTS

So,can we now close the idea that Mgs4 is going to be on the 360?

kojima said that a while ago,but he also said that in an interview somewhere that its not impossible for the 360. Konami can just have another team do the port of something down the line. But theps3 is the console that he believes best suited for the game.

Actually he said in an interview not too long ago that MGS4 isn't possible without the PS3's hardware.

Actually, Blu-Ray players are built in a way that all they need is a firmware upgrade to read some higher formats. As long as the disc isn't too calibrated (having more than two layers), firmware should be able to fix it.

does the man have no talent at all? has he never been exposed to real developers? has he never heard of compression? he should buy a copy of splintercell, a game that is better and under 6 gigs. he is looking for excuses to keep the publisher and incestors from demanding a their money back. mgs went duke nuke'em forever.

when you compress things they tend to lose some quality, that's probably why it might be so large. But thats also why it's probably be possible for the 360 also. I'm just sayin' its possible i'm not saying is goin' to be on the 360. I think its great though that he's puttin' all that space to good use, thats what its there for.

Ignorance is bliss.

Seriously dude, opinion is opinion but yours is obviously not widely accepted and has no basis. At this point Kojima is known as one ofgamings most influential developers. Who's the main man behind SC? Why don't we ever hear anything about him? While Kojima consistently raises the bar in all aspects with each release, Ubi keeps putting out a new SC every year like it was Madden. Besides the multiplayer SC has not really evolved from 1-4. Everything in SC is scripted, context sensitive, hold your hand like a baby gameplay. One weekend rental and the single player appeal is lost. MGS games on the other hand have a free-form style + pack in tons of secrets making replay value go through the roof!

MGS4 will be remembered for years to come. SC4 will be popular for about a month and then follow suit with the rest of the easily forgettable titles out there. Its takes time to develop something special, not just crap out a half ass sequel every year.

You can't start with MGS4! It's like watching "The Return of the King" before you see the first and second movie.

Plus, MGS 1-3 are extremely good games, if you own a PS3, why don't you just play them? Last gen still have the best games ^^

lol. Your right. Its just that everytime a new SC is announced Ubi starts talking about all these great changes and im always the sucker that falls for itand ends up with the same rehashed experience. I want to believe SC4 will be better but they just need to take more time with it and it might actually be something great. Then you got this guy dissing the creator of a top of the line franchise saying he needs to play SC? W/out Kojima there probably wouldn't be an SC!

The current spec of Blu-Ray is only 25 GB, and he wants the newer spec 50 GB Blu-Ray for MGS4. (Not a Dual Layer 25 GB Blu-Ray, but the single layer 50 GB Blu-Ray)

And Kojima said that he wants to use the new higher spec 50 GB Blu-Ray for MGS4.

****

stop for a second. are they telling me that somones not giving the 50GBs for the ps3's biggest game of the year? because if they were it would be :The current spec of Blu-Ray is only 25 GB, and he is using the newer spec 50 GB Blu-Ray for MGS4. (Not a Dual Layer 25 GB Blu-Ray, but the single layer 50 GB Blu-Ray)

And Kojima said that he is using the new higher spec 50 GB Blu-Ray for MGS4.

if Kojuma doesnt get his 50 GB im going up to the person responsible of not giving it to him and puncing him in the face. he could always put in 2 50GB discs. that would REALLY shut up the " 9 GIGS is enough" and " blu-rays not needed"

ps your name was cesored cool!!!!!

what sucks is you know a game like MGS4 that deserves GOTY in everyway possible because it has the best story, graphics, sound, and gameplay... and its using a 50gig disk!... but no.. as usual some stupid hyped cartoon game like Halo3 or masseffect will get it.

I hope when everyone says MGS4 will be big they don't mean game length. All that space is being used for hi-res textures and uncompressed 7.1 surround. I suspect MGS4 will be longer than the rest, but not by that much. Definitely not RPG length by any means.

On the same note I'm not belittling his use of space at all. That uncompressed sound means we get the sound quality usually only available for cut scenes while in game. Its gonna sound like a full blown action film while we play and if you have surround its gonna be that much better.

The extra space being used for textures will give us not only a higher quality, but also more variations so each place can look unique.

Long cutscenes in MGS? Of course.

Takes up lots of space? Hell no.

You see fmv/cgi takes up lots of space. MGS cutscenes have always been in real-time meaning all the assets (characters, environments, items) are already on the disc and just play out there role in the 3d environment during cut-scenes. Its not some pre-recorded HD that takes up a ton of space.

haha i love all the 360 fanboys who think splenter cell is the best stealh action game out there gameplay wise when compared to the game series that started the entire genre. Say what you want about not liking the game due to personal preferences but to say kojima doesnt know what he is doing when if it wasnt for him you wouldnt have that copy of splinter cell is just rediculous. the man is one of the most respected throughout gaming history. him and miyamoto are indisputable legends in mine an millions of others books.

Not only that, but most of them dont even know what the disc space is being used for. Hi-res textures and uncompressed 7.1 surround. It seems that most people think this game is gonna be RPG length and then you got the other guys that think its being taken up by cut-scenes even though the cut scenes are in real time and dont take up much space at all.

True, true.
Did´nt Hideo say that they had different footsteps depending on what you was walking on?
Only that takes up lots of space.

now why do you think it would look like crap on the 360? Have you seen Gears of War? or a few other 360 games? They're on par with ps3 games and some multi games actually run better onthe 360. Kojima said in an interview "I'm not developing on the PS3 because it's the best piece of hardware. That's not my approach. You can find a similar level of power on PC and I think the Xbox 360 could deliver a similar visual result." I'm not hatin' on the ps3 or anything i have one, but I also own a wii and soon a 360(as soon as they start makin' a few hardware changes). And if you really want a game with high quality graphics why don't you just get a high end pc( i also plan on buildin' one too)then you can play games like crysis and bioshock.

It just gets old everytime a game claims to take up a lot of space everyones like "OMFG its gonna be bigger than Oblivion". A game is only long due to scenario design, not because the disc space it uses. MGS4 will be using the space for quality and variation (enemies, weapons, items, textures, sound.)

A game is only long due to scenario design, not because the disc space it uses. MGS4 will be using the space for quality and variation (enemies, weapons, items, textures, sound.)treelog187
take morrowind for example, it dwarves oblivion in content and in length lol its almost unfair to compare them when your talking to an elder scrolls veterean :)

now why do you think it would look like crap on the 360? Have you seen Gears of War? or a few other 360 games?

Well you go dedicating all that power to graphics and thats what you get. Real pretty games that are short and shallow. Besides im sure MGS4 is working on a lot more than just shiny graphics considering Kojima said from the start "Im not just building a set, im building a living world". To me that means hes not just making eye candy and to expect reactive environments and complex AI.

They're on par with ps3 games and some multi games actually run better onthe 360.

Multiplat goes both ways brother. For one its not the fault of a particular console, but the developers themselves. All the Tom Clancy games have been better on 360, whereas Oblivion, FNR3, and The Darkness have all been better on PS3. Trust me there isnt a game out right now that couldnt be just as good on the opposite console.

Kojima said in an interview "I'm not developing on the PS3 because it's the best piece of hardware. That's not my approach. You can find a similar level of power on PC and I think the Xbox 360 could deliver a similar visual result."

Again, its not just visuals were talking about.

I'm not hatin' on the ps3 or anything i have one, but I also own a wii and soon a 360(as soon as they start makin' a few hardware changes). And if you really want a game with high quality graphics why don't you just get a high end pc( i also plan on buildin' one too)then you can play games like crysis and bioshock.

True, but im not a big fan of spending that much money only to play a few graphically advanced games that might not even be fun when my console investments guarantee good games for years w/out needing upgrades.

you might not have been tree, but from maverick's post i just assumed he was speakin' from a graphical stand point not the game as a whole. Both systems are still very new so it'll be a few years before we see what these things can really do. And your right it's up to the developers and how well and creative they can be on the machines that'll determine the outcome of a game.

I don't remember what he exactly said but he didn't exactly say "blu-ray too small" that was a article head line. this is from another source, but i think this is what he said "You may hear Blu-ray is huge, gigantic, 20 GB or so, but that's not really that big to us. One basic [gameplay] with HD visual and 5.1 sound takes up so much space that the capacity will become too small in no time." More power to the guy that wants to put that space to use, its there for a reason right?
