L1 R1? Com on people. They are simple buttons, You have no control over firing, an or other features. They are not pressure sensitive. I think a lot of the reason what people think L1 and R1 is better because they never had a real chance playing the natural way, you know with triggers?
L1, R1 setup is more natural for the un-ergonomic design of the dualshock controllers. L1 R1 is deff the sweet spot it just feels better, R2 and L2 make the analog sticks feel like I have less control on my character plus the triggers aren't too satisfying for shooting. GTA did it well though.
I prefer L1 and R1 because if there is a Semi-auto gun its much easier and faster to use the button where you have to push less ;) L2 and R2 i find work well with driving games because you can press the button less and you can go slower and push it down all the way to go faster

I think the reason people prefer L1 R1 is because we shoot with our index fingers and if we need to use the triggers L2 R2, you can use our middle fingers or slide your fingers down without needing to change your grip.
