I'm not trying to be a fanboy, biased, or anything. (I have the 360, Wii and getting the Playstation 3 soon) But I always feel that GS is a bit more tough with their reviews (the odd time, they're more lenient) anyways, if you see a 9.5/10 on IGN, (most of the time) assume that GS will review it a bit lower.
9 is an awesome score, and on metacritic.com it has a 96/100 average. Awesome game, I'm definitely picking this up when I get my PS3.
When i saw that gamespot gave Little Big Planet a 9.0, i was somewhat shocked.i honestly was expecting a 9.5 or a 10, and to hear outstanding raves on the games' perfections, since it has been the most talked about game coming to the PS3. I'm not saying that I'm not getting the game, because I am :-). I just feel more was expected from the game amongst critics. Anyone else agree?alex13echo
9.0 is a fair score imo. I think lbp looks like an amazing game but I heard the jumpimg could use improvement, and their's no story line.
But don't get me wrong, I think 9.5 would have been a fair score to. But not a ten. I'd have to get my hands on the game to fully judge though.
i dont see why anybody wouldnt be excited about a 9. its a great score and the ps3 hasnt had much in the way of platformers.
edit: come to think of it. its even better considering its coming from a site that (with the exception of mgs4) seemingly has a vendetta against ps3 exclusives.
IMO a 9.0 seems a fair score(i say seems because i only played the beta and thats not enough to really give it a solid score).
I had mixed feelings about the game, basically because im just not that creative, i really enjoyed the create part for a good 3-4 days solid but i never really enjoyed playing other peoples levels or the MM levels as in terms of skills/abilities theres less to do than mario 1, all you can do is jump or grab if there was some sort of attack or power ups playing levels would have been allot more fun even creating levels would have been more fun.
It's an amazing game that has started a genre of its own and im pleased to see it getting good reviews and i hope it sells really well, i have it pre-ordered and im still debating wheter to cancell or keep it and try and get a bit creative with the full game.
I agree with gamespot about the amount of time it takes to make something, to make the most simpliest of things takes quite a bit of tedious work to get it working IMO, my friend loves the game and spent almost 60 hours making a level and his only problem with the game is that it takes so much time to tweak everything to get it working properly.
I never really expected them to perfect a game like this on there first try but still they done an excellent job i just do not think its a game for everybody, the more creative types will get the most of LBP and sadly thats not me which is a bummer as id love to have a crazy imagination and build mad levels but after days of trying on the beta im just not that type of person or i could be over quite a few hours but i barely get that much time to game now a days.
I think it should have gotten a 9.5 or even a 10. Some of their criticisms were kind of stupid. The complaint about how creating a good level takes time?!?!? How is that a bad thing? Its called effort yields reward.
I played the beta and it is one of the coolest, revolutionary games Ive played yet.

Creating a character takes time aswell. But you're designing a level for god sakes. I actually would be pissed if I could only make a level in two minutes with all it's power and tools available. That's like crapping on working for Nintendo because it took "too long" to create a level in a Mario game. You go into LBP knowing this..
Well at least IGN did gave it 9.5. You could spect something like a 9 from sites like gamespot and gametrailers. Despite LBP is not my kind of gameplay i do know it deserves a better score, because of quality, fun facts, replay value and stuff like that.
Maybe if it was made for 360 it could get a better score haha
9.0 or 9.5 or even 10, it doesn't really matter that much.
The problem is, the reason behind this 9.0 rather than a solid 9.5 is not legit.
"Building a compelling level can be time-consuming." What the heck is this complain? Is the reviewer out of imagination of grouping words already? How can he justify his scoring by putting this into weakness category is beyond my vision.
The game is great, but from the beta I could tell that there was some weird stuff going on with the gameplay. the three dimensions get in the way sometimes and the jumping doesn't always behave like you'd want it to. a 9 is what I'd have given the beta.somesthetic
Yup, the gameplay has some bugs on it, i wonder if the gameplay makes up for it...
Damn I want this game really bad.
Although Im pretty damn sure Im going to buy it...I dont really know if I should. Im kind of broke, and $60 doesnt come along as nothing anymore :P . My moms wont let me get a job unttil my school grades go up..but then she pays for my gas.
This seems like one of those games that Ill buy, beat, then never play again.
For example: Motorstorm, Resistance, R6V ( I played that until COD4 came out ), Warhawk, R&C, GTAIV..just got bored of it, and eventually I never played COD4 anymore. All I play is NHL 09 now, and before that all I played was NHL 08.
EGM gave it a 10. IGN gave it a 9.5 :)
But we know there is no lover for the PS3 here so it got a 9.0 Still a great score :) But wait and see what Fable 2 will get :)
We all know Uncharted deserved more than a 8.5, so I'm not too phased by it.
By the way, for thosethat have played the game/beta, are the graphics any good? I can't tell from the cheap flah videos, they make every game look like Circus Atari.
I'm surprised it got a 9. It lacks a storyline, so it should have received an 8 if it really is that damn good. It had better be the greatest platformer of all time - greater than Mario and Sonic when they were at their peak. Its given me an idea though, I'm going to create a movie that the viewer has to make themselves. In the DVD kit I'll provide some string, play dough, a few dolls and some childrens music to accompany it. I'll call it BigFatWorld.
LBP is not worthy of a 10, lets reserve that for true classics like GTA4 (sold 500 million copies) and MGS4.
You have all made such good points. I don't know where to begin.
I will certainly wait to play the game before I deliver my final "verdict".
But I see no reason (not yet anyhow) to make a fuss over a 9.0!
Then again, I agree with many of you about the reviewer's point that
making a compelling game level is time-consuming. THAT is no real
reason to criticise such a kind of game. Remember NeverWinter
Nights? If I told you how many real-life hours I spent making modules
for that game ... well, you wouldn't believe me.
How is it that you yourself decide to rate a game?
From within it's own genre (relativistic comparison to peers)
This probably does not apply, since LBP is being touted as a
"unique" game. If it were truly unique, there would be no fair
comparisons of it, because it wouldn't belong in a taxa with
other games (none other of it's type or category).
Gameplay and nothing more (how much enjoyment it offers)
Graphics, animation, and sound (eye and ear candy)
The list could go on ...
A 9.0 is a good score. Whether LBP deserves it remains to be seen. We'll take our time and enjoy the game and see what it has to offer. But, yes, it is not a fair point about the length of time it takes to create a game level "worth playing".
I'll never understand why people complain about a 9.BioShockOwnzThis. Though I do wonder what score it would have gotten if it was not hyped so much etc etc. Or if lets say it was a Pc game/wii/360. I won't get into that though, I need to get my hands on it before I care to agree or disagree with a review ^.^
Edit: Also am surprised looking at the poll that so many form opinions on a game before they have it, and solely on hype (minus those in beta)
I think it deserves a little less to be honest. The story is really short, the map editor is overly complicated, and the multiplayer is hard to play due to the camera angles.shabazz5th
Overly complicated? Have you had a lot of experience with map editors? I think it's very intuitive and pretty simple to use. You just have to be a good designer to come up with sometihng interesting.
I am shocked it got a 9.0. But, not in agreement with most of you. I played the Beta and read the review and thought it was more deserving of an 8.0 or 8.5. The game is great. It's quite imaginative and creative. It's definitely a fresh take on platformers and I wouldn't be surprised if other developers began to learn from it and view it as the platformer to beat. But, I don't think that will be much of a problem.
When playing the beta, I felt that a lot was missing from the actual game itself. Reading the review and understanding that the full version can be beat in one sitting definitely did NOT sit well with me. The controls have a slight delay when it comes to jumping, and grabbing doesn't feel fluid either. Consider these are the only actions in the game, that (to me) is unacceptable.
The creation portion of the game is EXCELLENT!! However, that mode is not for everyone. Not all of us have the time to invest in level creation and that leaves the beef of the game out. The game in itself, should have included at least twice the amount of levels with more variations in gameplay. Essentially, it seems the game is based on the creator instead of it being a game with an in depth creation feature.
I feel that critics were very forgiving of its short-comings because they often reward creativity and innovation. I agree that it is both. But otherwise, the game is lacking in gameplay mechanics and it divides it's target market into people who have the time and others who don't.
