LBP is one of my favorite games ever, but I doubt you will feel left out if you don't get the first game. Every optional level and all the DLC from the first game will roll over to the second game.
The only thing you will be missing is the 50 story levels made by the creators. It's not a very well written story, but the levels are truly art. There's no denying that. Is every level worth $1 AUD? Not sure.
Well, then wait. Unless you ABSOLUTLEY HAVE TO HAVE THE DLC PACKS NOW. Which you dont... just save up for the collector's edition. Anything to give that godly company money... :P
@ tc im aussie and bought LBP GOTY edition the uk pal edition off ebay and it comes with abit of DLC (MGS LBP pack, costumes, kits) and it is compatiable with the aus psn store DLC. you can get this for around $35-40. Ive linked a store which sells it for $35.99 with free post (which is reliable and relatively fast). Well LBP is pretty er unique i bought it mainly due to the reviews and im not really liking it much, so if youve never played it before and really want to try LBP get the first 1 your better off trying it out and seeing if your going to like it, it would be a waste if you spent full price on LBP 2.
