no you don't, I see sony is going to try to battle the xbox elite. but I think the xbox elite is just trying to battle the ps3 to begin with so I see no need for it. I mean really how many people are gonna use up all 60 gigs. and IF you need more you can just buy that add on. This isn't supposed to be a bash thread, the ps3 is superb, but I really just think 80 gigs is unnecessary.
It isnt confirmed there will be an 80gb PS3..as far as i know, but your right, you could just go buy a bigger hard drive, xbox 360s new "xbox elite" isn't a very good move, its way more expensive for like 100 gigs....sure it may be able to use 1080p but games and HD DVD will never run in it...they arn't going to ignore the fact that 10 million 360s are not the elite and can't do 1080p while HD DVD can only do 1080i and most people that i know who have a 360 are upset about this they feel like they are getting ripped off cause microsoft is like xbox elite is for the true gamer or whatever, or they are just like ill spray paint it if i want it black, i dont care
60GB is enough and I would buy a bigger HDD if I ever needed more space. I doubt that would ever happen, but I absolutely refuse to buy an 80GB PS3. I REALLY hope Sony doesn't put one out. It's a waste of money on their part, and it's bad for consumers because the price will go up.

The premium 360 can do 1080p, but only if you have an HDTV that's capable of it through component(Samsung, Sharp).
i think it will just be sold in stores for the people that bout the 20 gig and don't now much about the computers to now he can just go buy a 2.5 hd. it is the an easy way for the 20 gig guys and girls to upgrate.

360 Elite is $479 + $180 for 120gb hdd. I think it's a rip off. You can get a 2.5" 5400 rpm 120gb for PS3 for half that price.
Well Apparently they are thinking about it, but if they do release, will it only be different by having 20GB more? I'll kill sony if they pull an MS on us! Bigger HDD I dont care. More advanced tech, I'll be angry!

360 Elite is 479.00 and comes with the 120GB HDD seperately though for those who already own the 360 the HDD will be 180.00 which yes is still a rip-off. Sony doesnt need to come out with another PS3 with a 80GB HDD, because we can just buy an HDD thats bigger than the 360s 120 GB for less than what MS is charging. Sony doesnt need to make an "Elite". Its already "Elite". Making a PS3 with a bigger HDD is just going to be way to expensive and it would be cheaper for indiviuls just to buy a bigger HDD.

IF all it has is an 80gb HDD, then I don't see the point. You can easily add a 120gb HDD to a PS3. Unless this new model has other features the current 2 systems do not, I think it's quite pointless.
ITS NOT REAL. GET OVER IT! Stop making stupid topics about this. The whole reason for having the removable HDD is so that IF we need the extra space, we can get it which means that Sony wouldnt have to make any upgrades.

These last few days the most popular topic in this forums has been ps3 gamers trying to claim "ownage" because Microsoft released another version of it's 360 after launch.
I'm sorry, but I find it friggin halarious that a few days later there are heavy rumors about an updated console coming to the ps3. It really did shut a lot of sony fans up....since it was listed as "not bogus" on gamespot, there have not been nearly as many "MS SCREWS IT"S CUSTOMERS" threads in system wars.Â

A reasonable speculation is that SONY will phase out 20GB, 60GB's gonna go to 499 and the 80GB's gonna go to 599, both with WiFi available. The dropping manufacturing cost of BD lens and Cell 65nm enable SONY to take this move. It's not a nominal price cut, but it'll work the same as a price cut. Customers pay the same amount of money for better stuff.
It may not be needed right now for the PS3 but what is stopping Sony from releasing an IP similar to the IPTV launch from Microsoft? The fact of the matter is, to achieve DVR through a console, you are going to need the space. Although I don't agree with the cost of what Microsoft is offering, to launch what the want to launch is going to take more than 20GB of space. Who knows what will happen.

It's not over-kill at all. I'll be doing a manual upgrade of my PS3s drive ASAP. The reason being 1) I'd love to add all my favourite tunes so that (if/when) I can my music in game - I can have more choice etc. 2) I love watching my downloaded TV/MOVIES etc through my PS3, and video content in HD is large, nuf said.

why the hell would sony put out a 80gb HDD afte they went though all the trouble to make a hdd you can switch out with ease by making ita laptop HDD, can easily get 160gb for a good price. explain how you make sense thinking an elite ps3 needs to be made its already elite
