So I got a PS3, and I'm having trouble getting 5.1 surround sound from my PS3. I have the connection going from the PS3 through HDMI to my relatively new sony reciever, then HDMI out from the reciever to my plasma. When I output Linear PCM through HDMI, however, my reciever wants to display audio in a 2-channel output, despite the fact that the reciever SAYS it is getting "Linear PCM 5.1."

Of course, if I change my settings to Bitstream output, I get the glorius 5.1 surround I want, except certain games and a couple discs I have ONLY have Linear PCM audio, and during these instances I don't hear center or surround speakers, which makes for a heady experience since all I hear is the SFX tracks on the L and R speakers.

Is it a setting in my PS3, or a setting on my reciever? Keep in mind it's a Sony reciever, less than a year old. Any help would be great.

Thanks.

I don't think all Sony receiver support PCM. I know STR-DG series does though. Check online site to see if you receiver support PCM Linear.

Please list your model number. Not sure of any model that would say it's receiving LPCM 5.1 and not output it, but it's quite possible.

From what I know, its best to keep it on PCM to get the True HD sounds, and Bitstream is used if you are using Optical cable instead of HDMI, in ur case ur are using HDMI so keep it on PCM. Btw these settings are not all great so most people end up switching between these two whenever they play Blu-rays or Ps3 games. Again though if I were you I'd keep it on PCM. I have done alot of research on this and unfortunately no one option is 100% correct.

Your receiver does not support Linear PCM, an uncompressed surround sound format only supported over HDMI (even though your receiver has HDMI ports on it). It DOES know how to handle standard PCM, which is 2.0. You typically see this in CDs. Bitstream, as you have guessed, is the signal stream handling Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1 and refers to the way the data in these formats is transmitted versus PCM.
