Hey guys, I'll soon have a PS3 and one of the first things I want to do with it is install Linux. I'm not experienced with Linux but I am tech savvy.

I would like to know if you have it installed?

and if you do which version would be better between Yellow Dog and Ubuntu?

Alright mate, you'll need to format 'OTHER OS' to install linux, there's already an article on this subject which can be found here:

http://www.ps3hacks.net/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=51&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0

I'd recommend using Yellow Dog Linux.

I have Ubuntu Linux installed but never use it...... I don't think it is really usable for someone who don't have some knowledge of Linux..... plus its very slow... no RSX, only 256 of memory...

it's cool to put linux on the ps3. The distro im using is Gentoo and it's a breeze but only downfall is that it takes way too long to install a program depending which you're installing. It took about 1 hrto put VLC on there. GOod grief!Whatmakes it simple iswheninstallinga program, all you have to type is emerge from the terminal then sit back and let the installation complete. I'm currently using VLC playerto play wmv, avi, and other video formats on my hdtv.I'd customized my themes. It's very customizable. At first i did ran into problem with the VLC gui interfacebut was able to resolve it. The troubleshooting part is what makes you want to pull your hair out sometimes. If the program work then it will be very stable. If it doesn't... be prepared for a hell of a ride. It's like a computer+game in one. sometimes when i feel lazy using my pc i just sit there in front of my tv and surf the internet on the ps3. Between Yellow Dog and Ubuntu.... I would go with ubuntu because of it's popularity. I was in the same situation as you in the past. It was either ubuntu or gentoo. I went ahead with gentoo because i did my research and felt that it matches my preference. There's tons of distros/flavors out there for you to pick. Just go with one that best suits your taste.

Ubuntu is the most graphically friendly version of linux.
Why is Linux good? You can customize absolutely everything about your computer, creating a more secure and resource friendly system.
Why is Linux bad? It doesn't support many windows applications we've learned to love, and the Linux immatations are rather lacking. If you have a problem, you ask the community, if they can't find you a solution your stuffed.
Linux is a community based operating system, and due to the fact that their such nerds, they can be up themselves.
You need to be quite a code monkey to know what your doing. If you don't I'd strongly recommend you learn before taking a dive, because once you do there's no going back.

What exactly do you mean by "there's no going back?"

AND

Would you recommend I use Ubuntu over Yellow Dog? I have never used Linux before.

no going back? sure there is. you backup your ps3 using the backup option then you reformat the drive. I've already done it once. I use Ubuntu. It's easy to install and use for someone new to linux.

Is the internet faster if your using Ubuntu on the PS3? Because I swear the browser on the PS3 is like using dial up and ugh...I hate it sometimes. Both me and my wife's computers are down sooo were pretty SOL for internet use. Sony should of made a deal with Firefox or something and have Firefox on their PS3's....that would be sweet.

Yeah I have the same problem. Not sure if its just my one, but the internet browser runs at dismal speeds, and always freezes soon as i open say 2-3 windows of game spot. Some times even the 1 is a struggle (it just goes blank)

Come on sony - fix the browser you brag about

my ps3 internet is bad. It sometimes cannot do more than one gamespot page (and my internet is fine). Plus you cannot watch gamespot videos on it.

That's because the flash/java support is hidious. They've put very little effort into their browser imo. It's basicly there to tell you "you can connect, ...". Code Monkeys are fun!.

Linux has always been Copy-Left. (Not Copy-Right) That means it's freeware to be edited by anyone. That's what anyone/everyone would mean by community based OS. The source code is open for anyone to read as well. So if you don't want to share your programmable knowledge, you wouldn't use it.

PS. Linux is not Windows, not being able to run executables is no a draw back. It's a compilations of algrathyms made specifically for windows. Exe is closed source. That's like saying your PS3 lacks because it can't run Wii/360 games. I beg to differ. Anyways, Linux isn't user-friendly. It isn't supose to be. Most servers run on linux kernels becuase of it's security. :3

Well I've been playing with Windows settings for 10 years and OSX settings for 4 years. I think I'll defitnely give linux a try. If it doesn't work out, I keep trying and if that doesn't work out, at least I have OSX for my laptop and Windows for my HTPC. I'm going to try Ubuntu, since it looks to be more "newb" friendly and if I like it I'll move on to Fedora and other stuff. Thank you guys for the awesome smart discussion.

I just threw this up now. But this is whatever browser is in it when you buy. And it will do some vid "like YouTube." As far as upload and stuff. I have not tried so? But my background now is Ms Lima not Ratchet. Gotten off the internet. But you can do this out of box.

Not sure if the link will work yet, I just put it up. Just a small bad vid lol. Like 1 minute.

And yea my BlueTransAm83 name, is a name I once used here for a little.

I've installed Ubuntu on my PS3.

I've had trouble getting Ubuntu to connect wirelessly to the internet. Anyone successfully do this?

Also, anyone know of any good emulators for Ubuntu or Linux in general?

Mike: Because rpm's are a pain. For them to work you may need to install other programs first, ie dependancies. This is not automatically done. You should be able to google a list of all the programs you need to install for that rpm to work. We can't talk about emulators on this forum. Do a google, there are tons of guides.

An easier way to install programs is YUM (YellowDog update Manager) and YUMEX (YUM Extender.) Do a google on how to set up YUM and YUMEX. Its easier because it auto installs dependancies. From there you'll probably have to learn to compile your own programs from tars for other programs that aren't in the depositories. VLC is a breeze to install though.

Tuddle: Ubuntu does not support the PS3's wireless unless you update the kernel to the same one YDL 5.0.1 uses. Do a google.
