So this past weekend I try upgrading the PS3 HDD, 60Gb SKU

Ok so i get one screw to come out including the blue one and one from the hdd tray, but i strip the other three trying to get them out with the same screwdriver. so now i have a 250GB 2.5in SATA HDD and a stripped 60GB hdd sitting in its tray :(

Any advice or ideas? I was thinking of going out buying a new PS3 trying to use its HDD tray and return it but idk if there is a easier way around it????

Pliers + Iron Grip. Replacement screws can be had from PC repair stores.

There are special tools for that at any hardware store. Get one before you slip and cram a pair of pliers into your HDD.

Well home depot does not carry the screws needed. What tools exactly am I looking for? I am going to ask around @ a store or two to see if someone can spare a tray and screws which i doubt.

I had problems with the screws as well so i went the easy route- called Sony and asked for a replacement drive tray. The rep extended my warranty enough to make sure I wouldn't be charged for it too. B) If you don't feel that's an option go to a computer store to find the tools you'll need.

Ok so I emailed Sony customer support. IDK i might try calling their store to see if i can get faster service. I dont want to buy a Ps3 only to return it or sell the one I have but I refuse to let a 250GB hd go to waste. I'll try using pliers to get the screws out and let you know how that goes.

Pliers or Vice Grips and they'll come right out.

Replacement screws from something like this. You could also try hitting up your local Geek Squad and asking if you can have/buy 4 HDD screws from them.

Well i know most stores charge a restocking fee if you decide to return them.

But thanks to lyndonAPI I might be all set i spoke to someone from Sony who took my info and said someone would call me...I'll wait to Wednesday and If i dont hear from someone I'll call back to see what the deal is but i Should be getting a new HDD tray and screws. Now thing is i need to buy a drive to restore or backup my current PS3 since it is asking for media with at least 13GB but if come to worst i backed up gamesaves that would allow me to back them up R6V2 wont let u back up gamesaves :(

If you have an electric drill, or something that can handle drill bits - you can get an attachment for taking out stripped screws. Actually it is a package with two attachments.

First it drills into the screw to make a groove. Then you switch attachments, and this attachment fits into the groove that the first attachment made and you can easily take it out. It's very useful for things like electronics and even carpentry and for construction/reno work.

Just go into a hardware store and ask for drill bits, and a screw extractor for stripped screws. Or you could use pliers like the other guy said.

well i just spoke to sony again and i guess the tray is coming from another one of their sites waiting to be shipped to them to ship it to me i guess so we shall see how much longer i have to wait as i have had the HDD 250GB for about 2 weeks and now It might take a while to update my PS3 to the most recent firmware if the data resides on the HDD in which i hope and doubt the firmware rests somewhere else so im waiting now holding my breath.

You're really taking the long route.

As for the FW, it's on the system, not the HDD.

Took nearly 2 weeks. Tray came with extra screws and all. Used a 20GB IDE HDD formatted Fat32 backed up with USB SATA/IDE device and restoring now. Not sure i might have to make PS2 internal cards again but the tray was FREE so today I am a happy camper.

Hey everyone. I had this exact same problem, and managed to get the stripped screws out with needlenose pliers. There was just enough at the top to grip onto to unscrew them. Hope that helps anyone else who gets that problem. :D

To Sony: Maybe use better quality screws in the future? Ya know, ones that don't get stripped as soon as you try to unscrew them? Either that or don't do them up so tight? Just a thought.
