Mine is always loud and gets hot quickly. But haven't had major problems yet, and I keep it in plenty of open space to breathe :)

You ought to turn it off now and again... It may be working fine now but it's not worth risking over heating it.

Ok, give it a days worth rest then. Like, after I fixed my ylod problem I had to give it a rest for a while. Then try again maybe a day or two later.

I know were gamers and we like to play all the time but our consoles needs rest like we do.

When it gets loud, its overheating. Turn it off for a couple of minutes before you play again.

Loud PS3 is not normal. I recommend you shut it down or let it rest because the fans are going full speed.

i own 2 PS3's and i can honestly say that a noise issue is not normal. maybe you should have it looked at to see if anything is wrongwith the fan before it breaks on you. it may be a simple issue to fix, but if you let it go for two long it may eventually break on you. just a thought.

You may want to find out what's blocking the air flow. Also have you tried standing the PS3 up vertical. I did this and my system stays fairly cool all the time and it's on 24/7.

First make a backup of your PS3 HDD data and about your question,...

...no, it's definitely not OK! Your PS3 has issues with the cooling system. My 2year old 60GB was behaving similar, very load at start up, never steps down with fan speed and being very hot all the time, till it died last week with a yellow red light of death! Many 60GBs are having the same issues, most of the PS3 that belong to those few 3% of all died PS3 are in fact 60GB versions! Hell, Sony even had a campaign were you could exchange your old 60GB PS3 with a brand new 40GB for almost free with one of Europes biggest electronic markets!

Now I have a brand new 80GB, absolutely cool, silent, can't hear the fan almost, even the disk is loader then the fan and itsteps down with fan speed very quickly.

So please, believe me, don't hesitate, your PS3 is broken and has been bought with a broken cooling system! Get to your store and request a new one, as long as you have the guaranty!!! And if you want to call Sony, don't let them fool you. They will say, all is OK, but that's not right. That's not the normal way, the console should work. I even suggest to request money back and buy a new one from another store to avoid getting a similar broken console from the same shipment (same faulty production line).

What can cause this malfunction? Mainly it is caused bya messy applied cooling paste, between chips (Cell or GPU or even both) or faulty heat sensors.

Here are links to prove the concerns and to convince you to act!!!

German link to official forum with more then 200 pages of posts about this problem!

http://community.eu.playstation.com/playstationeu/board/message?board.id=196&thread.id=59638&view=by_date_ascending&page=1

English link

http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=3420218

so if you even have a 80GB version and it behaves like a dying 60GB that will proberly die, then you have to do something, mate.

Good luck.

Nope. It's just cooling itself off, not necessarily because it's overheating.

I got my PS3 a couple of months ago and it is amazingly quiet compared to the 360. You better listen to what these guys are saying, could lead to something bigger and worse then just a loud noise.

Nope. It's just cooling itself off, not necessarily because it's overheating.

Exactly. Loud =/= overheating. When the unit shuts down and flashes its standby light a few times, it's overheated. The fans may be working harder in these warm summer months, or due to the temperature of the room its operated in. Loud fans isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I wouldn't worry about anything until the unit actually shuts down and flashes the standby light. It's probably just because its summer, and the ambient temerature is higher. In the cooler months the fans will probably run quiet.

That's good, better than the time I use mines daily. Although it's not like the PS3 is going to blow up if you use it 24/7. Just gets hot.
