I wouldn't be so sure it's a coincidence. It would stand to reason that, given the context of the game, that they'd derive inspiration from an extremely old secret society that was known for its use of symbolism and such, particularly given the outrageous rumors involving the Freemasons.

Only the devs can say whether or not it was a source of inspiration. Personally, it wouldn't surprise me at all but, like you, I'm not terribly interested in that either! Even the Freemasons couldn't save Assassin's Creed from being a Grade-A letdown in my eyes.
